Respiratory Health
Emphysema
A disorder in which damaged alveoli in the lungs can no longer take inadequate oxygen and eliminate carbon dioxide
Epiglotis
A flap of tissue that seals off the trachea when food or liquid is swallowed
Trachea
A large membranous tube reinforced by rings of cartilage, extends from the larynx to the bronchial tubes and conveying air to (bottom) from the lungs; the windpipe; splits into two bronchus tubes because of the carina of trachea
Alveoli
Air sacs; where gases (oxygen and carbon dioxide) are exchanged between he air and the blood
Bronchitis
An infection that causes the mucus membranes lining the bronchi to become inflamed
Laryngitis
An inflammation of the voice box (larynx) from overuse, irritation, or infection
Bronchus
Any of the major air passages of the lungs that come off of the windpipe (trachea)
The Respiratory system
Brings oxygen from the outside environment into the body; removes carbon dioxide from the body
Asthma
Disorder when respiratory passages become inflamed
Diaphragm
Dome-shaped muscle that lies below the lungs; attached to the spine, ribs, and sternum; main muscle of respiration; helps with breathing
Larynx
Hollow muscular organ forming an air passage to the lungs and holding the vocal cords in humans and other mammals; the voice box
Helps lungs become more efficient at taking in oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide
How does exercise help your lungs?
19 million adults and 7 million children. Total of 26 million people
How many adults and children have asthma in the U.S?
You can keep the respiratory system healthy by avoiding tobacco and air pollution, treating asthma, avoid respiratory infections, getting regular exercise, and maintaining a healthy weight. You can avoid tobacco by not following what society does and smoke. Air pollution is like the tar in tobacco and will clog your lungs. If you have asthma it would be very beneficial for you to treat your asthma. Also treat infections that you may have in your respiratory system. You must exercise regularly so that you help your heart and lungs work to their fullest. Finally, you must keep yourself at a healthy weight so that your heart can work properly because of the correct balance of weight it has to your height. By following these five simple steps your respiratory system will be able to work very well.
Identify and discuss ways to keep the respiratory system healthy.
Alveoli and capillaries
It is in these two structures that the exchange of carbon dioxide and oxygen are exchanged.
Cilia
Line most of the repiratory tract; capture mucus that containdust and microorganisms and sweep it toward your throat to be swallowed
Pollen, exercise, tobacco smoke, pet dander, dust mites, mold, cold air, perfumes
List the eight asthma triggers.
Pharynx
Membrane lined cavity, behind nose and mouth, connecting them to the esophagus, cone-shaped, back of the throat; helps push food to the esophagus and prevents air from being swallowed, longitudinal fibers lift walls of the (pharynx) during swallowing
Pleura
Membranous lining of the upper body cavity; lining around each of your lungs; lines walls of the chest cage and covers paper surface of the diaphragm
Nose, paharynx, larynx, trachea, and bronchi. Filtered, warmed, and moistened.
On its way tho the lungs, air passes through what structures where it is __________, ____________, and _______________.
Dust, pollen, microorganisms. Microorganisms can cause disease. (Which are bacteria, fungus, virus-mutate)
Other than oxygen, what three other particles do we breathe in and which one can cause disease?
Inhalation
Rib muscles pull the ribs up and out; diaphragm flattens; volume of the lungs increases, and air flows in
Nasal caviy
The two nostrils, hollow space within once and skull, lined with hairs and a mucus membrane; warms, moisturizers, and filters the air entering the body before it reaches the lungs
Exhalation
Volume of the lungs decreases, air is pushed out; rib cages returns to its original position; diaphragm relaxes and moves upward
To take in oxygen and expel carbon dioxide
What are the functions of the respiratory system?
Avoiding tobacco and air pollution, treating asthma, avoiding respiratory infections, get regular exercise, and maintain healthy weight. AVOID TOBACCO
What five ways can you keep your respiratory system healthy and which one is the most important?
The volume of the lungs increases, the rib cage moves up and out, and the diaphragm contracts and flattens
What happens to the chest cavity as it enlarges in the inhalation process?
Mucus membranes become inflamed which causes them to secrete a large amount of thick mucus
What is happening when a person has bronchitis?
Mucus warms and moistens the air.
What is it about mucus that an trap some of these particles?
Capillaries
What structure surrounds every air sac in the lungs?
Cilia and mucus
What two structures trap: dust, pollen, and microorganisms, before they reach the lungs?
Wear a mask and work in well-ventilated areas
What two things can you do to prevent inhaling pollutants?
Helps you from straining your respiratory system
Why is maintaining a healthy weight important to the health of your respiratory system?
