Science Test 11/18
What rock boomed the industrial industry.
Anthracite Coal.
Describe the process of clastic sedimentary rock formation
1. Weathering and erosion of pre-existing rocks 2. Transport of the weathering products 3. Deposition of the material 4. Compaction
Be able to describe what a depositional environment is and give two examples of sedimentary rocks and their depositional environment.
A depositional environment is where sedimentary rocks form and originate overtime. Chalk and coquina are both examples of sedimentary rocks. Chalk is formed in deep waters, while coquina is formed from beaches or subtropical marine waters.
Be able to give an example of a fine grained rock and a coarse grained rock
An example of a fine grained rock is Basalt. An example of a coarse grained rock is granite.
Intermediate
Both dark and light. Has some magnesium and iron. (mixed)
Be able to give an example of a felsic, intermediate, and mafic rock.
Felsic- Granite Intermediate- Andesite Mafic- Coal
Mafic
Dark colored and rich in magnesium and iron
How do igneous rocks form and where?
Igneous rocks form when hot, molten rock crystallizes and solidifies. They mostly form in volcanoes.
How is an igneous rock that forms from lava different from an igneous rock that forms from magma?
Igneous rocks that are formed from lava are extrusive while rocks formed from magma are intrusive.
Why is it important to study rocks? Your answer should include a sedimentary rock, igneous rock, and metamorphic rock?
It is important to study rocks because we use them in our everyday life. For example, limestone is used to make cement, granite is used for countertops and buildings, and marble is used for statues and interior designing.
Felsic
Light colored-lacks iron and magnesium
Describe how metamorphic rocks form.
Metamorphic rocks are formed by heat and pressure. It forms deep underground.
What are some of the causes of metamorphism? (Hint: Know the terms contact, regional, and dynamic).
Metamorphism is caused by temperature, pressure, and chemical changes.
How are minerals different from rocks?
Minerals are different my rocks because they make up the rocks. For example quartz is in granite.
No Grains
No visible grains in igneous rock
What is a test used to identify a mineral but not a rock?
One test used to identify a mineral but not a rock is the streak color test.
How is a rock exposed to uniform pressure different in appearance from a rock that receives directed pressure? (Hint: Know the terms foliated and Non-foliated).
Rocks that are exposed to uniform pressure are foliated. Rocks that receive direct pressure are non-foliated.
How can you tell the difference between a sedimentary rock and an igneous rock?
Sedimentary rocks have layers, unlike igneous rocks. Sedimentary rocks also can have fossils within the rocks which igneous rocks can not have.
Why are fossils only found in sedimentary rocks?
Since fossils are are found underneath earth's surface like sedimentary rocks. The low temperature and pressure allows fossils to be preserved in the rocks.
What are some common uses of minerals?
Some common uses of minerals are makeup and electronics. For example, silica is in face primer and quartz is in cell phones and televisions.
Understand the different tests for identifying a mineral.
Some tests to identify minerals is the streak color test, mohs hardness test, and chemical reaction.
What are the 5 Characteristics of Minerals?
The five characteristics of minerals are crystalline structure, chemical composition, solid, naturally occurring, and inorganic. Without any of these characteristics, it is not a mineral.
What are the three types of sedimentary rocks? Be able to describe them and give examples.
The three types of sedimentary rocks are clastic, chemical, and organic. An example of them is conglomerate, (clastic) chalk (chemical), Bituminous coal (organic.
What two questions should you ask yourself when identifying an igneous rock?
The two questions you should ask yourself is if the igneous rock is intrusive or extrusive and what is the grain size of it
How are sedimentary rocks classified?
They are classified by the type of sedimentary rock they are. They are also classified by grain size.
Coarse Grained
You can see it with your naked eye and forms circular shape.
Fine Grained
You can see the grains with a magnifying glass. (microscopic grains)
