It's not a matter of "if" things fail, it's about when things fail. One of the benefits of Scrum is faster problem resolution. This is supported by short (compared to traditional project manage- ment) work/delivery cycles called Time-box or Sprints -- typically no longer than 4 weeks. We're not going to boil the ocean each Sprint, just take a small increment of the whole and work on it. If a problem is discovered we'll address it immediately. Because each Sprint delivers the current highest value (to the business) we avoid scope-creep and resulting surprises.
