Sir Gawain questions
Author is embarrassed because no knight of the round table steps up to accept the knights challenge so he himself accepts it. Then Gawain decides to do so : quote Gawains words as he agrees to the "swapping of licks"
"Now by heaven foolish is thy asking, and thy folly shall find its fitting answer. I know no man aghast at thy great words. Give me here thine axe and I shall grant thee the boon thou hast asked."
Then he proposes an unusual exchange (Gawain's second contract in this story). Describe this bargain they agreed to. Provide quotes to support your answer.
Gawain proposes a deal that whoever can find the Green Chapel and the green knight, Gawain would forever look up to that person. "...I make request of you that ye tell me truly if ye ever heard word of the Green Chapel, where it may be found, and the Green Knight that keeps it"
There are several bargains or contracts offered in this story. The first is offered by this strange knight. Describe his proposal in detail
In the beginning of the poem the green knight proposes that if another knight would duel him and won that he would give the other knight his axe as a gift for one year and one day.
Describe the knight who enters the banquet hall on horseback. Always use quotes from the story
The green knight rode in on a horse. Both covered in green, the knights clothes were lined with fur, and the horse had gold spurs. "For he was clad all in green, with a straight coat, and a mantle above; all decked and lined with fur was the cloth and the hood that was thrown back from his locks and lay on his shoulders. Hose had he of the same green, and spurs of bright gold with silken fastenings richly worked; and all his vesture was verily green."
Part 2 traces the passage of time in the year that follows as Gawain awaits his time to repay the Green Knight. His mood grows darker and darker with dread as the time draws near. He hears his "last Mass." Then he gets his shield and armour: describe his shield in detail. Make certain to include the Pentangle and its purpose
The shield brought to Gawain was bright red with the pentangle in the center of it. The pentangle was a 5 point star that meant a never ending knot. it was fitting to have this on his shield as he was a "faithful in five and five-fold"
What time of year is it when the poem opens
When the poem opens it takes place on New Year's Eve
In part 3 we get the first of the hunts described: a deer hunt circa 1350. The writer is quite graphic in his description—a nature poet. What happens to Gawain while the host is hunting? Describe the encounter in detail: Provide quotes as appropriate to support your answer.
While Gawain is asleep the Kings wife comes to where is is asleep and sits on the edge of the bed next to Gawain waiting for him to awake. "It was the lovely lady, the lord's wife; she shut the door softly behind her, and turned towards the bed; and Gawain was shamed, laid him down softly and made as if he slept. And she came lightly to the bedside, within the curtain, and sat herself down beside him, to wait till he wakened."
They exchange gifts at the end of day 1: describe that exchange
At the end of day one a kiss is exchanged between Sir Gawain and the kings wife after she professes her infatuation with him.
Contrast the two women he meets. See if you find some foreshadowing. What is this foreshadowing?
Between the two women he meets they are very very different. one lady he describes to be the most beautiful thing he has ever seen while as for the other lady he doesn't find her as appealing nor intriguing as the first. The way he talks about the appealing girl shows that he might have an intrest in her.
What does the host hunt on Day 2, and what prize does Gawain receive in the castle?
On this day the hunt is out for a boar. Gawain received the spoil on this day.
