Skin Functions
Regulation of Body Temperature
*Constriction and Dilation* of blood vessels affect the amount of heat that escapes from the skin into the surrounding air. AND *Sweat Glands* are stimulated in response to heat and are inactive in cold temperatures.
Functions of the Skin
Regulation of Body Temperature, Adipose, Synthesis of vitamin D
Sensory Reception
The dermis contains numerous sensory receptors for heat, cold, pain, touch & pressure. It detects information about the environment & also serves as a means of communication between individuals.
Synthesis of Vitamin D
Precursors of vitamin D are found in the skin. When the skin is exposed to ultraviolet light, these precursors are converted into active vitamin D
Protection
The skins forms a protective covering over the entire body. It protects against water loss with keratin in the cells, invading organisms, ultraviolet lite with melanin, other injuries.
Adipose
is a subcutaneous tissue (fat) that helps insulate the body.
