They could have had a variety of places to import items from. This way they could have built important relationships wiht other countries. They could've also spread their rleigion elsewhere, for example, Rome.

They didn't have the goods that they needed so they traded others for it.

They established colonies from 1000 to 650 B.C.E. They were located in Asia Minor, Spain, France, Italy, Africa, and along the coast of the Black Sea.

They fought over farmland since they didn't have enough to support these people.
