Catholics were looking for a refuge where they could worshop their faith as they liked.

What are some differences/similarities between the Puritans and the Pilgrims?

DIFFERENCES: Pilgrims wanted to break away from the Church of England. Puritans did not want to break away from the Church of England, they only wanted to to CHANGE it to make it more "pure." SIMILARITIES: They both came to North America to practice their religious beliefs.

What were some jobs people had in the colonies?

Farmers, shipbuilders, goods traders (fur & crops), hunters, carpenters, blacksmiths, and carpenters.

Explain the Great Awakening.

It changed the way many people practiced their religion. It opened everyone to having a direct relationship with God. Membership rose because everyone was welcome.

Why was indigo important?

It was important because rice did not grow well in areas where the land was higher and drier, but indigo (a plant that produces a blue dye used to color clothing) grew well. It became the major cash crop in South Carolina.

Who is James Oglethorpe?

James Oglethorpe was the English leader who founded the Georgia Colony. It was his idea to use DEBTORS to set up Georgia.

Who is John Winthrop?

John Winthrop was the Puritan leader who served as governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

Who is Lord Baltimore?

Lord Baltimore (also known as Cecilius Calvert) was the proprietor who established the Maryland Colony.

How did the role of men and women differ in the colonies?

Men and boys spent their days farming and hunting. They were also plantation owners, lumber workers, fur traders, brokers, shipbuilders, millers, blacksmiths, and carpenters. Women and girls spent most of their time preparing food. Women and girls had few chances to work outside the home. However, if a woman's husband died, she could take over his business. Some women ran taverns, printing businesses, and silversmith shops. Women were not allowed to vote.

What role did the Puritans have in the colonies?

Puritans lived based on their beliefs. They wanted to make the church more "pure." Puritans lived by strict rules and were encouraged to work hard and save. Schools were important because all Puritans needed to be able to read the bible. They did not welcome people whose beliefs differed from their own.

What role did the Quakers have in the colonies?

Quakers believed that all people were equal. They refused to fight in wars or to swear loyalty to any king. The Quakers were looking for refuge in North America.

Who is Roger Williams?

Roger Williams was the founder of Providence in what is now Rhode Island. He was forced to leave Massachusetts Bay.

They worked on the plantations.

Who is William Penn?

William Penn was the English Quaker who founded the Pennsylvania Colony. He gave people FREEDOM OF SPEECH, FREEDOM OF RELIGION, and the right to a TRIAL BY JURY.
