The Walker Line

A line that established the original southern border by a survey party led by Virginia physician, Thomas Walker

Licking River

Cave Run lake was formed on this river's upper reaches to control flooding downstream. It runs into the Ohio River in Covington

Bowling Green

City in Kentucky that lies along the Barren River and is home to WKU Hilltoppers and Corvette Museum.

Green River

Colorfully named river that empties into the Ohio River near Evansville, Indiana

Black Mountain

Highest point in Kentucky- lies on border between Kentucky and Virginia

Fort Nelson

In 1791 this fort was insufficient for protection against Indian attack. Today it is a park in Louisville

Danville

Kentucky's first Constitution was drafted in this town names after Walker Daniel who first owned the site.

Mammoth Cave

Largest cave system in the world. It has more than 200 miles of caverns

Perryville

Bluegrass region

Region of KY best known for grasses that have creeping rootstalks that form good soil. It is also famous for horse farms

Pennyroyal region

Region of KY that touches all but one of the other regions, the "Land of Ten Thousand Sinks" is within this region that takes its name from a plant of the mint family

Jackson Purchase

Region of KY that was the last to become a part of the state after congress approved a treaty with the Chickasaw nation in 1819. It is the westernmost region.

Cumberland River

River that descends from a plateau down to a waterfall that occasionally shows a lunar rainbow. It flows into Tennessee before returning to Kentucky where it empties into the Ohio River

Big Sandy River

River that forms the border between Kentucky and West Virginia

Cumberland Falls

State park in Whitley County also called Niagara Falls of the South/ It is known for its Moon bow.

Natural Bridge

State park that features geological formation that tourists can walk on and under.

Western Coalfield

This area is rich in coal, but much flatter that the eastern part of the state

Eastern Mountain and Coalfield

This includes the Appalachian Mountains in the eastern part of the state

Knobs

This region is shaped like a horseshoe. it borders the Ohio River in 2 places and is dotted with numerous rounded hills.

Red River

This river creates a well-known gorge that is an attraction for campers and hikers. I t joins the Kentucky River near Richmond

Daniel Boone National Forest

Two million acres of mostly woodlands make up this natural forest in Eastern Kentucky

Falls of the Ohio

responsible for the establishment of Louisville. The Portland Canal was created along the Ohio River to bypass this area. Today this is an Indiana State Park.
