simple predicate

simple predicate or verb is: main words or word groups of the predicate, i.e. one verb or verb phrase - The boy *runs* on the road - These books *are* available in the media center - The class *is reading* the novel. - The musicians *have been rehearsing* since noon.

tells whom or what the sentence is about - Can *horse and castle* swim? - in the cage was a *hungry tiger*

verb phrase

- can be a predicate of a sentence or clause. - verb phrase = main verb and helping verb altogether e.g. She *did* not *believe* me. (not is adverb) I *will* never *eat* there again. (never is adverb) I *must finish* cooking. - The class *is reading* the novel.

compound subject

- consists of two or more subjects that have the same verb. e.g. *and, or * - Kate and Todd worked in the same group - Among the speakers were an *astronaut, an *engineer*, and a *journalist*

compound verb

- consists of two or more verbs that have the same subject. connecting word (say and, or, but) is used between the verbs - The dog *barked* and growled* at the stranger - you *can leave* now or *wait* for the others - The man *was convicted* but later *was found* innocent of the crime

how to identify simple subject/simple predicate?

- simplify the sentence to subject+verb *as short as possible*

both subject and verb may be compound

The *guide* and the *hikers* *sat* inside and *waited* for the storm to pass by.

complete predicate

consists of a verb and all words that descirbe the verb and complete its meaning. It is verb and everything behind it: i.e. all words in the sentence excluding the complete subject. - She *runs after the cat* - my brother *delivers pizza* - *under a large bush sat* the tiny rabbit - *does* this copier *staple and fold documents*? - *How talented* you *are*?

helping verb

helps the main verb in the sentence and expands it Examples: should, may, might, is , are

include all words about the subject

simple subject

main word or word group of subject - *stamp collecting* is my hobby. - *several* of the players hit home runs - *accepting the ward was *Leo Kolar*
