1968: In the early hours of January 30, 1968, the North Vietnamese launch this, a massive military strike against South Vietnamese towns and cities. Caught off guard by the offensive, which came during a truce called to celebrate TET - Vietnam's lunar New Year - U.S. and South Vietnamese forces rallied and in the days that followed delivered a crushing tactical defeat to the Viet Cong. Westmoreland pronounced the outcome a victory for the U.S. Yet the TET Offensive demonstrated that North Vietnam was better equipped, better trained, and more determined to win the war than the American public had been told to believe. As LBJ had put, "there is light at the end of the tunnel." TET made a mockery of such claims, compelling the United States to step up involvement in Vietnam
