Skirmish

A brief fight among a small number of troops

Runaway Scrape

Anglo settlers abandoned their homes and fled east to escape Santa Anna. As they left their homes and villages, they destroyed everything that would be useful to Mexican troops.

James Fannin

Colonel in the Texan army who suffered defeat at Coleto Creek, near Goliad. He surrendered to Urrea with the belief he and his soldiers would become captives and not killed.

William Travis

Commanded the Texans against Mexican forces at the Alamo

Sam Houston

Commander of the entire Texas army and leader of the Texans at the Battle of San Jacinto. The first president of the Republic of Texas elected by the people

Convention of 1836

Delegates gathered at Washington-on-the-Brazos to declare Texas independent from Mexico. They also wrote a constitution for the Republic of Texas.

Treaties of Velasco

Ended fighting with Mexico and identified the Rio Grande as the border between TX and Mexico

Goliad

Goliad "massacre" - where more than 300 Texans were executed by order of Santa Anna after their surrender at Coleto Creek.

Santa Anna

Mexican general who led troops against the Texans at the Alamo

Battle of San Jacinto

Sam Houston defeated Mexican troops under General Santa Anna to win Texas's independence from Mexico and end the Texas Revolution

Battle of Coleto Creek

a battle fought east of Goliad between Texan forces commanded by colonel James Fannin and Mexican forces commanded by Jose Urrea. Fannin surrendered to Urrea. Most survivors were later executed on the orders of Santa Anna.

Lorenzo de Zavala

a former Mexican citizen who was appointed the Republic of Texas' first vice-president

David Crockett

a former volunteer colonel from Tennessee who helped defend the Alamo

James Bowie

a volunteer colonel who jointly commanded the Alamo, then fell too ill to fight

Texas Declaration of Independence

contained three sections: the right of revolution, grievances against the Mexican government, and a proclamation of independence. Grievances included 1) the arrest of Stephen F. Austin 2)failure to establish public education 3) denial of the rights such as trial by jury and freedom of religion.

Jose Urrea

led the Mexican army to victory in several skirmishes, including the Battle of Coleto Creek

George Childress

led the committee that wrote the Texas Declaration of Independence

led troops who were defeated by the Texans at the Battle of San Antonio in 1835

Battle of the Alamo

the most famous battle in Texas History. Mexican forces led by Santa Anna laid siege to the Alamo for 13 days. Mexican forces overran the Alamo killing all men inside on the morning of March 6, 1836
