The banging noise was certainly reality, not something Eleanor had been imagining, and someone had really been calling for her: Theodora. Something was walking down the hallway, banging on each door with what sounded like a cast iron. As the noise got closer and closer to the room which the women were in, Eleanor and Theodora felt the air get much colder as their fear continued to grow. Eleanor put herself next to the bedroom door and shouted at whatever was tormenting the girls to go away. This only resulted in temporary silence, followed by shrill, bellowing laughter that sounded as though it was coming from the house itself along with more loud banging. This continued until, finally, the noise was put to a stop by Luke and Dr. Montague rushing up the stairs and calling out to the girls, asking if they were ok. It is later learned that the boys heard none of what happened to the girls; it was silent up until they began yelling themselves.
