The Rhineland
What was the result Hitler's success?
Germany built fortifications in the Rhineland so from then onwards it would be harder for Britain and France to attack Germany.
How did Hitler justify this breach of the TOV?
He said the Franco-Soviet alliance was a threat to Germany.
When did Germany invade the Rhineland?
March 1936
What was Britain and France's reaction to the occupation of the Rhineland?
Neither was surprised. France wasn't politically stable enough to do anything because she had a caretaker government but she still asked Britain for backing. Britain knew France wasn't going to do anything and if France wasn't getting involved they weren't going to. British MPs thought Hitler should be able to occupy his own 'backyard'.
Why was invading the Rhineland a gamble for Germany and how did Hitler remedy this?
They weren't strong enough to fight a war so troops had orders to withdraw at the first sign of French opposition.
