Briefly summarize the four stages of writing

1. Planning: formulate information. Make a list to explore a variety of subjects. To experiment alternative ways, think about a subject. ROUGH OUTLINE to see how you can develop info. 2. Drafting: organize and develop a sustained piece of writing. Once you planned to identify several subjects and to gather info from different perspective, select a subject. Discover links to meaningful clusters. 3. Revise: 2 types global and local. Global: complete recreation of the world of your writing. Local: concentrated effort to perfect the smaller elements of your writing. Reexamining and reevaluating the choices that have been created for the essay. 4. Editing: correct spelling, mechanics and usage. proofread misspelled words, mangled sentences, or created typographical errors.

(formulating ideas to reformatting sentences) 2. consider what you want to write and how you want to write about it 3. planning and drafting to revising and editing.

What is a discovery draft? What does it help you determine about your hypothesis?

A discovery draft is a draft that is meant to test your hypothesis by writing this first. It will demonstrate that this hypothesis works (or not). Tis helps determine if you will discover new info or foreseen complications that causes us as writers to modify the original hypothesis.

How do purpose and thesis statements differ?

A thesis statement should be open to more than one interpretation. It usually appears in the first paragraph of your essay and states the main idea you are going to develop. Purpose is what and how you want to do for your writing. It is considered to be larger than your thesis: it consists of all the strategies you will use to demonstrates your thesis in a sustained and successful piece of writing.

what does TRILLIN mean by "the vomit out," when he is writing, and why does he do this?

According to Trillin "the vomit out" is like Therber he sees how it unfolds and goes to the end without really knowing the journey. He does this because when he shifts from writing investigative reports to writing humorous essays or weekly columns.

It is difficult to choose a hypothesis when it comes to determining the purpose because we as writers should be open minded and consider all possibilities. We should temperament demeanor etc.

How can having to write in different contexts affect the writing process?

It will uncover, assess and assert information. We have to be flexible when applying these steps. Writers discover problems when being asked to write in different contexts.

Nugent: careful constructor. Concerned about plotting the play. Knew how the plot is going to be executed. Thurber: let the words flowed through him. THURBER

What is the difference between purpose "inside" the writing situation, vs.purpose "outside" the writing situation

Purpose "inside" is the overall design that governs what and how the author makes in his or her essay Purpose "outside" completes the assignment, publishes it or works for a grade.

How do confusion and contradiction occur in writing?

The beginning and the end might not have the same message. There should be no confusion

What strategy helps you think more like an "audience"? What is the drawback of this strategy?

Think of yourself as the audience but a drawback is that it blurs your judgement. Since we know our info, it does not mean our readers do.

Why isn't the process of writing always linear

Writing is a complex and mental activity. You should go back and forth because there is no sequence. There a different ways depending on the author's style

Who is your most "significant audience"? Why?

You and your collaborator because they should want to learn something interesting and important from your writing
