thesis statement
Example of thesis statement or not
"Ernest Hemingway is one of my favorite authors." -- No one could have an alternative opinion about this; if you say he's your favorite author, then he is. "The music of Pink Floyd was the most important influence on American pop music in the 1980s." This is a strong thesis that could be argued with evidence. "Eating organic food is good for your health and helps the farming economy, too." The problem with this one is that it focuses on two main points, not one, as required by a strong thesisl "The use of hybrid and electric vehicles has increased over the past ten years." This is a verifiable fact--that is, it is either true or not true, but it is not arguable. "We can improve the usability of many consumer goods by having more women in the engineering workforce." This is a strong thesis that is arguable from evidence. "Having to choose a major in college unnecessarily forces students to specialize in a subject area. Students should be allowed to take the courses they want without considering a major." Remember that a good thesis can be expressed in two sentences. This is a strong thesis. "Safety is an important consideration in aviation; airplanes should be made safer." A good thesis is arguable. No one would argue that airplanes should be less safe. -express a fact or obsevation In Moby Dick, Melville writes about a sailor named Ishmael. [This is true.] The largest country by land area is Russia, and the smallest is Vatican City. [These are facts about cities. No one could argue with this.] Philosophy is the study of knowledge and reality. [Someone could argue that philosophy includes other topics, but no one could argue that knowledge and reality are not part of the study of philosophy.] In 2006, Pluto was reclassified as a dwarf planet. [Some people disagree with Pluto's reclassification, but they cannot argue that it was reclassified.]
How to make a thesis statement:
-First is establish a topic (or main idea) -Second add an argument or opinion to the topic
Make a good thesis statement
-ONE -it one main idea -example one main idea My essay is about the problems in our health care system and how expensive it is. ( two ideas!) -SPECIFIC - it specific -says exactly what you are going to argue Jack London was the best American writer of his generation. (This is too vague--what does "best" mean? It is nearly impossible to argue something based completely on individual taste. What is best to you may not be best to me.) -DIFFERENT INTERPRETATION -it's open to different interpretations In the current economy, pension plans are changing. (This is true--but so what? Why is this interesting, important, or controversial?)
Characteristic
-The topics has to be a point of view that is arguable or open to interpretation. If everyone agrees with your ideas, you don't have a thesis. -A thesis has a point of view. It has an opinion about the subject, but it is not the subject -Validate a thesis statement = ask if someone could possibly disagree with your point of view. -A thesis statement is not an observation "Since the beginning of time, people have wondered what causes a great society to decline and fall."
