Moses Austin
He owned a bank in St. Louis and the panic of 1819 ruined his business and in 1820 he travled to San Antonio to request a land grant, but then Governor Martinez told him to leave town because of earlier filibuster activity. He ran into Baron de Bastrop, who helped him write a proposal to the Mexican government, and then the government aproved the colony of 300 familieson texas land.

Martin de Leon
In 1824 he started a colony of Mexican citizens near the mouth of the Guadalupe River. This area would become a major ranching center in the state, with Victoria becoming the main settlement. By 1824 the colony would have 300 people, mainly Mexican with a few Irish and Americans.
