Types of Irony

Socratic Irony(Example)

A child asks his parents how the presents got under the Christmas tree to which the parents reply that they have no idea.

Dramatic Irony(Definition)

A circumstance in which the audience or reader knows more about a situation than a character.

Verbal Irony(Definition)

A figure of speech in which what is said is the opposite of what is meant.

Situational Irony(Example)

A man who is a traffic cop gets his license suspended for unpaid parking tickets.

Situational Irony(Definition)

A situation in which there is an inconsistency between what is anticipated and what actually comes to pass.

Socratic Irony(Definition)

Feigning ignorance for the purpose of exposing an other's flaws.

Dramatic Irony(Example)

In Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare Romeo finds Juliet in a drugged state and he thinks she is dead. He kills himself. When Juliet wakes up she finds Romeo dead and kills herself.

Verbal Irony(Example)

It's no big deal, my dad just died...

Cosmic Irony(Example)

The Titanic was promoted as being 100% unsinkable; but, in 1912 the ship sank on its maiden voyage.

Cosmic Irony(Definition)

Type of irony where it seems that events so as to inspire false hopes, which are inevitably dashed.
