divide a population into subgroups, choose a subgroup at random, and choose everyone in the group ex. divide schools into classrooms, randomly choose a classroom, survey every student in class
stratified
dividing population into subgroups, then taking a simple random sample from the subgroups ex. separate into male and female, choose 3 of each
simple random
gives everybody an equal chance of being selected ex. drawing names from a bag
systematic
ordered arrangement, every _th individual ex. every 7th person takes a survey
voluntary response
sample made up of volunteers who choose to be a part of the sample ex. optional survey
convenience
selected by people who are easy to reach ex. first 10 people in line
