Understanding Convection
What are the 3 layers in the Earth?
Solid Core (source of heat), Liquid Mantle, Solid Crust
What is convection?
a type of heat transfer due to particles moving within a liquid or a gas
What causes sea breezes?
Air that is hot rises, and air that is cool sinks. At the beach. if the land is hotter(day), than the breeze comes from the ocean. If the land is cooler (night) the breeze goes to the land.
How does convection happen?
In this heat transfer, the particles gain heat energy and they start to move around. the spaces between them increases and they become less dense. As a result they float and carry their heat with them.
Why can't convection happen in solids?
Solids can't transfer heat this way because solid particles are not free to move around, they vibrate in place so they can't gain heat and rise.
How does convection cause earthquakes?
The core is hot. The core heats up the mantle, which causes convection cycles in the mantle. As a result, the mantle moves the plates on the Earth's crusts and they can rub together causing a _______________.
When does convection occur?
This heat transfer occurs when hotter molecules move more, spread out, and the float (rise) because they are less dense. Molecules with heat move from a hotter region to a cooler region and take their heat with them.
Where does convection occur?
This heat transfer only happens in liquids and gases.
