Unit 4 - Matter & Energy Study Guide
What are the reactants and products of cellular respiration?
the reactants—glucose (sugar) and oxygen—combine together to form new products: carbon dioxide molecules and water molecules
Describe the role of photosynthesis and cell respiration in the cycling of carbon.
Photosynthesis converts carbon dioxide and water into oxygen and glucose
Describe the relationship between photosynthesis and cell respiration?
Photosynthesis converts carbon dioxide and water into oxygen and glucose. Glucose is used as food by the plant and oxygen is a by-product. Cellular respiration converts oxygen and glucose into water and carbon dioxide. Water and carbon dioxide are by- products and ATP is energy that is transformed from the process.
What are the reactants and products of photosynthesis?
carbon dioxide and water (the reactants) into glucose and oxygen (the products).
What cell organelle is involved in photosynthesis?
the chloroplast
Does cell respiration occur in plant cells, animal cells or both?
Both
Describe what happens during the process of photosynthesis?
During photosynthesis, plants take in carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O) from the air and soil. Within the plant cell, the water is oxidized, meaning it loses electrons, while the carbon dioxide is reduced, meaning it gains electrons. This transforms the water into oxygen and the carbon dioxide into glucose.
Does photosynthesis occur in plant cells, animal cells or both?
Just plant cells.
Describe what happens during the process of cell respiration?
a glucose molecule is gradually broken down into carbon dioxide and water
What are the products of alcoholic fermentation?
carbon dioxide and ethanol
What are the products of lactic acid fermentation?
carbon dioxide and lactic and acetic acids
How do organisms generate energy when oxygen is not available?
fermentation releases energy from food molecules by producing ATP
Where do organisms get energy?
food, nutrients, or sunlight
What factors affect photosynthesis?
light intensity, carbon dioxide concentration and temperature.
What cell organelle is involved in cellular respiration?
mitochondria
