What do real conversations have that you do not want in dialogue

"jumping all over the place conversations". You are not replicating a real life convo, you are giving impression of one. Do not bore reader. fiction is real life with dull bits removed, hone in on important part of convo.

Descriptive

A class of literature popular during 16th, 17th, 18th centuries in Europe and useful in vividly illustrating a moment, landscape, or still life -Think sketch -Focuss of poem is to thourouglhy describe 1 particular aspect of something -Intent is not to tell a story, but to deeply depict a particular subject by using rich vocab and imagery

Agenda

A clear expectation of what we hope to achieve

Simile

A figure of speech involving a comparison between 2 things, such as the moon looks like cheese. The function of this is to add dimension and understanding to objects in your work. Gives readers a way to attach themselves to writing, to relate to imagery. Makes poem more accesible

Metaphor

A figure of spreech that is applied to an object or action, but it is done litteraly rather than figurativly. This means object dosn't seem like something else, it is something else. Simile and metaphor help achieve different moods and tones in poem

Theme

A poems subject is the topic or theme. Can be stated explicitly, but usually implied through use of devices discussed. WHen reading a poem, ask yourself why the poet chose the subject and what larger ideas the poet is refering to through the discussion of that particular subject. Common themes=love, death, loss, reality, youth, beauty, self-knowledge. Repeated words or images will help determine theme

A short description of the location and time in a scene from a screenplay

Character Sketch

A short peice of writing that has no plot and provides a concentrated view of a fictional character

Rhyme

A tool for utilizing repeating patterns that bring about rhythm. Rhyme creates a pleasing effect on ear and gives poetry a symmetry that separates it from prose. Aids memorization and facilitates learning

Didactic

Aims to instruct either morally or through providing certain knowledge. Contain clear message or purpose

Why is poetry difficult to translate to another language?

Because it emphasizes metaphore and symbolism over semantics. Every word has conotation that may be different than literal meaning. "weight of words" is important to poetry; not just their meanings, but how they feel, sound, and flood sensibilities. Poetry is personal

Describe: Dialogue should characterize

Characters are key to powerful fiction, so dialogue needs to flesh them out, give them purpose, and illustrate them for reader who is looking to understand person on deeper level

Alliteration

Derived from latin word meaning "letters of the alphabet". A stylistic device used to play with words by outting those with the same 1st consonant sound in a series. Makes poetry melodious and entertaining.

Dialogue Should be different

Every character is different, so dialouge needs to reflect that. Think about how they appear, how their mouths look, how they sound, what is motivating them. Words should come from inside out achieving this goal relies on the ability to step into their shoes. Visualize and be your character. WHo are they? What is their extent of vocab? Who are they talking to?

Personification

Happens when poet (or author) gives an abstract or inanimate object human characteristics. It can imbue any seemingly insignificant idea or thing with the power of a human being, capable of great feeling or tremendous ability

Dialouge should be concise

Less is more. This is not realistic to keep it short, but this is where crafting comes in. Make it seem real by using practica; methods. Do not include chit chat. You don't need complete sentences.

Context

Set of circumstances that surrounds setting.

Comedy Sketches

Short scenes monologues or vignetts that sometimes are the result of improvisations or well rehearsed humor that seek to amuse audience. Since audience does not hear writing, jokes need to be said just right

General rhyme

Some phonetic likness between words as it relates to stresses syllables, vowel, or consonant sounds glume/fun

Euphony

The quality of a poem that pleases the ear through a harmonius combo. of words. Promised land of rhyme and rhythm. Defined in Greek as "sweet voiced". This device is achieved when a poet successfully uses noteworty or melodius words and phrases together to create a soothing effect.

Imagery

The visually descriptive or figurative language in literature that allows objects, actions, and characters to become mental picture in the mind of the readers. Show don't tell. Don't need fancy words, just well placed nouns, verbs, adjectives. When read aloud, eyes closed, which words stand out

Sketch Story

This type of writing is shorter than a short story and contains very little plot. It is an individual moment captured in time that dosn't provide much of a begining on sense of closure. Slice of life/close up of larger fictional scene. It aims at suggestiveness rather than explicitness. Excelent exercise for aspiring writers because requires descriptive devotion of 1 specific element

To make it sound as real as possible

Dialogue should avoid being blatent

Turn it upside down to have more creative result. Rephrase dull language to make it intresting. It can also add to the characters personality.

Provide info. Any kind of info. that facilitates a better understanding of story. Dialogue provides info. that reader needs to know. It shows rather than tells
