Unit 8 Math Test Study Guide
If a room has an area of 77 feet and you know the width is 7 feet, what is the length of the room?
11 feet (How?)- The formula for area is length x width= area. If you put in the information you know: length x 7 ft= 77 feet. You can do division to figure out the missing factor: 77 divided by 7 = 11 feet
Suzie received a new square blanket. It has an area of 16 square feet. Her grandma wants to sew trim around the blanket. How much trim does she need to use?
16 feet (How?)- You would need to figure out that a sqaure that is 4 by 4 has an area of 16 because 4 x 4 = 16. Then you need to know that each side of the square is equal which means you add 4+4+4+4= 16
Rachel wants to plant a garden. Unfortunately the rabbits eat her tomatoes so she needs to put a fence around it. If her garden has an area of 20 feet and its width is 4, how much fencing will she need to purchase? (This is a perimeter problem but you need to figure out the length first!)
18 feet (How?)- If the area is 20 feet and the width is 4 then the length is 5 because LxW=area and 4x5=20. You then need to add all the sides up of the garden: 4 +4+5+5 because the garden has 4 sides. 4 +4 +5+5= 18 feet.
If 1,000 grams= 1 kilogram, how many grams is 2 kilograms?
2,000 (How?)- If 1 km= 1,000g then 2km would be 2,000g.
If a backyard is 120 feet long and 50 feet wide, how much fencing would you need to purchase to put a fence all the way around the yard?
340 feet (How?)- This is a perimeter problem. You would draw a rectangle. Label the length 120 and width 50. The parallel sides would be equal so you would add: 120+ 50+120+50= 340
If a square garden had an area of 81 square feet, how much fencing would need to be purchased to put a fence up all around the garden?
36 feet (How?)- You would need to figure out that a square that is 9 by 9 has an area of 81 because 9 x 9 is 81. Then you need to know that each side of the square is equal which means you add 9 +9+9+9= 36.
If 16 ounces = 1 pound then 3 pounds is equal to how many ounces?
48 ounces (How?)- If 1= 16 ounces, then you can figure out how many ounces 3 pounds is by using the number sentence 16x3 or using 16+16+16.
If 1 meter = 100 centimeters, how many meters is 500 centimeters?
5 meters (How?)- 1 m= 100 cm so.... 2m= 200cm, 3 m= 300cm, 4 m= 400 cm, 5m- 500 cm
