How a bill becomes a law
Laws originate from ideas from a Representative or a citizen. The Representatives research and write them into bills. Once a bill has a sponsor and some support, it is ready to be introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives. The bill is assigned a number and read to all Representatives, who then send it to one of the House standing committees. The committee members review, research, and revise the bill before voting on whether to send it back to the House floor. If the committee members need more information, the bill is sent to a subcommittee for further examination and expert opinions. Once approved by the committee, the bill is sent to the House floor for debate. Representatives discuss the bill and recommend changes, and when all changes have been made, the bill is ready for voting. There are three methods for voting: Viva Voce (voice vote), Division (supporting and opposing), and Recorded (recorded). If a majority of Representatives votes yes, the bill passes in the U.S. Hous
