Were the colonists justified in resisting British policies after the French and Indian War?
-Boston Massacre made them upset -promised stuff but didn't get it (could move west proclamation of 1763 said they couldn't) -unlawfully taxed
Does the United States have a mission to expand freedom and democracy? (Think Manifest Destiny)
-God sent them to expand west -what they thought, doesn't have the right to -land didn't belong to them -personal mission
Does Abraham Lincoln deserve to be called the "Great Emancipator"?
-No it was only a military tactic to write the emancipation proclamation -wanted the southern slaves to be freed by him so they would help the North fight in the war
Did Andrew Jackson advance or slow the cause of democracy?
-Slowed -pushed out native Americans -stopped national bank because it didn't help the common man
Was slavery the primary cause of the Civil War?
-Uncompromising differences between the slave and free states -Free states argues slavery was bad and wanted to make other states free as well -slave states in the south argued for slavery
Does the system of checks and balances provide us with an effective and efficient government?
-Yes balances power among branches of gov -not too much power to abuse -fair to citizens
Was the American Revolution a "radical" revolution?
-didn't change much in the long run -fighting started off conservative in fight for rights -turned out radical because declaration of independence was formed -radical thinking within it -went from having no say to having complete control
Does racial equality depend upon government action?
-government paves way for action -people still have choice to be racist -government produces stigma from segregation laws
Did America fulfill the dreams of immigrants?
-hard to get jobs -lived in crappy areas -were free of overpopulation, religious and political persecution -left behind customs, family, and old life -faced racial purists
Was George Washington's leadership indispensable in successfully launching the new federal government?
-improved foreign affairs, the army, and the economy -promoted capital need for commerce and industrial growth -the way he handled the whiskey rebellion was very good (sent troops to control it and all convicted people were treated like stated in the Constitution, got a speedy and fair trial) -Pickney's Treaty and the Treaty of Greenville helped America move westward -strengthened foreign affairs, the army, and helped the US move west
Were big business leaders "captains of industry" or "robber barons?"
-made it so much better for the consumer (mass production=cheaper goods -mistreated laborers (many hours, harsh conditions, failure to pass safety regulations, child workers, poor pay) -corrupt businesses "steal from the poor" -made life for farmers hard
Was it possible to have a peace of reconciliation after the Civil War?
-not immediately -Lincoln's assasination created confusion and tension -North just was salty and was not satisfied with rights given to African Americans
Did the Articles of Confederation provide the United States with an effective government?
-succeeded in satisfying states by giving them a lot of freedom, too much however, they ran their own states like their own countries -wasn't enough power for central gov so the country was going into debt -couldn't tax
