Society of Friends

Also known as the Quakers, the Society of Friends was a religious group who came to America for religous freedom from the Church of England. They believed that a believer could find grace from the "inner light" or a "spark of divinity" and also refused to take part in any sort of violence or war.

Quakers

English dissenters who broke from Church of England, preache a doctrine of pacificism, inner divinity, and social equity, under William Penn they founded Pennsylvania.

William Penn

Englishman and Quaker who founded the colony of Pennsylvania in 1681. proprietary charter...Member of the Quakers or also called the Society of Friends. founded the colony of Pennsylvania and the city of Philadelphia (city of brotherly love)

Philadelphia

city of Brotherly love founded by Quaker colonizers and was very successful. by 1700 is was the second largest city in the British Empire only second to London.

French American Settlement

one of the last to settle. 1600s moved into Canada then in 1699 found the mouth of Mississippi, 1704 New Orleans. 1-trade 2- slaves 3-spread catholicism to indians.

New York

settled 1624- originally Dutch colony "New Amsterdam", led by Peter Stuyvesant; 1664- Duke of York ordered to take it over, no force was used, name changed to New York. original charter by the Dutch West India Company. high trade in beaver and mink skins with Indians to sell back to England.

Directors

the Director was chosen by the Dutch West India Company. directors became very wealthy, they were corrupt. all had to follow the directors orders. because there was a director, they ruled basically, there was no voice from the members of the colony. the last dutch Director of New Amsterdam was Peter Stuyvesant.
