Inequality

A math sentence that compares the values of two expressions using an inequality symbol.

Rational number

A number that can be written in the form p/q , where p and q are integers and q is not equal to 0.

Irrational numbers

A number that cannot be written as a quotient of two numbers, p/q

Irrational Number

A number which cannot be expressed as the ratio a/b, where a and b are integers and b does not equal 0. The most commonly used irrational number is pi, or 3.1415926...

Square Root

A number which produces a specified quantity when multiplied by itself. For example, the square root of 49 is 7, because 7x7=49.

Power

A product of repeated factors. Expressed by using an exponent and a base.

Subset

A set within a set.

Radical Symbol

A symbol used to indicate the principal square root.

Set

A well-defined collection of objects.

Perfect Cube

Cubes which are a product of cubing an integer. For example, 27 is a perfect cube because 3x3x3=27 and 3 is an integer.

Exponent

The portion of a power which designates how many times the base is used as a factor.

Perfect Square

The product of an integer multiplied by itself. For example, 25 is a perfect square because 5x5=25 and 5 is an integer.

Scientific Notation

When a number is written as the product of a factor and an integer power of 10. The factor must be greater than or equal to 1 and less than 10.

Radical

When you combine the radical symbol and the radicand together

Cube Root

The number which produces a given number when multiplied by itself twice. For example, the cube root of cube root of 27 is 3, because 3x3x3=27.

Rational Number

Numbers that can be written as a comparison of two integers, expressed as a fraction.

Real numbers

The combination of rational and irrational number systems.

Real Number

The combination of rational and irrational numbers make up the set of real numbers.

Base

The common factor portion of a power. This is the number which will be multiplied a number of times designated by the exponent.

Repeating Decimal

The decimal form of a rational number which has one or more digits which repeat forever.

Terminating Decimal

The decimal form or a rational number whose repeating digit is a zero. Another words, it has an "end."

Radicand

The expression that is inside the radical symbol.

Integers

{...,-3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3,...}

Whole numbers

{0,1,2,3,...} or all positive integers with 0

Natural numbers

{1,2,3,...} or all positive Integers
