Martyrs

People who suffer death because of their beliefs. The Church has canonized many martyrs as saints.

Doctor of the Church

a title given by the Catholic Church to saints whom they recognize as having been of particular importance, particularly regarding their contribution to theology or doctrine.

A calling from God to fulfill a particular purpose or mission in life

Saint Therese of Avila

A Doctor of the Church. A reformer, her books are an important part of the Spanish Renaissance.

Saint Jerome

A Doctor of the Church. Best known for his translation of the Bible from Greek into Latin.

Saint Catherine of Siena

A Doctor of the Church. Remains a greatly respected figure for her spiritual writings, and political boldness to "speak truth to power"— it being exceptional for a woman, in her time period, to have had such influence in politics and on world history.

Saint Thérèse of Lisieux

A Doctor of the Church. She has been a highly influential model of sanctity for Catholics and for others because of the "simplicity and practicality of her approach to the spiritual life". Together with Saint Francis of Assisi, she is one of the most popular saints in the history of the church.

Saint Augustine

A Doctor of the Church. The Bishop of Hippo, a sinner who converted to Christianity and wrote the classic work The Confessions.

Saint Gregory the Great

A Doctor of the Church. Was a Pope, and was the first to attempt a wide scale conversion of pagans to Christianity.

Saint Ambrose

A Doctor of the Church. Was a staunch opponent of Aryanism.
