Week 3 - Bones
condyle
a rounded prominence at the end of a bone forming an articulation
glabella
a single bony prominence of the frontal bone located between the superciliary arches in the inferior part of the frontal bone above the root of the nose
mental eminence
a triangular projection on the inferior portion of the anterior mandible
foramen magnum
an opening in the occipital bone through which the spinal cord passes from the brain
coronoid process
anterior, non-articulating process of the ramus of the mandible which serves as the insertion for the temporalis muscle
frontal process of the maxilla
ascending part of the upper jaw which gradually protrudes as it rises beside the nasal bone to meet the frontal bone
mandible
bone forming inferior jaw
alveolar processes
bony ridge found on the inferior surface of the maxilla and the superior surface of the mandible which contains the sockets for the teeth
parietal eminences
determine the widest part of cranium
zygomatic arch
determine the widest part of the face
maxilla
form the skeletal base of the most superior face, roof of the mouth, sides of the nasal cavity, and floor of the orbit
angle of mandible
formed by the junction of the posterior edge of the ramus of the mandible and the inferior surface of the body of the mandible; marks the widest part of the lower 1/3 of the face
body
horizontal portion of the lower jaw
crown and vertex
horizontal surface of the frontal bone
superciliary arches
inferior part of the forehead just superior to the median ends of the eyebrows
nasal bones
lie directly inferior to the glabella forming a dome over the superior portion of the nasal cavity
frontal eminences
paired, rounded, unmargined prominences of the frontal bone found approximately one inch beneath the normal hairline
external auditory meatus
passageway of the ear
temporal bones
represent the inferior portion of the sides and base of the cranium, inferior to the parietal bones and anterior to the occipital bone
zygomatic bones
represent the widest part of the cheek
mastoid process
rounded projection on the inferior portion of the temporal bones just posterior to the lobe of the ear, they help to locate the posterior lobe of the ear
mandibular fossa
small oval depression on the zygomatic process of the temporal bone into which the condyle of the mandible articulates, just anterior to the external auditory meatus
supraorbital margins
superior rim of the eye sockets
frontal bone
the anterior 1/3 of the cranium, forming the forehead and the anterior portion of the roof of the skull
occipital bone
the lowest part of the back and base of the cranium
nasal spine of maxilla
the sharp bony projection located medially at the inferior margin of the nasal cavity
squama
the vertical surface of the temporal bone
parietal bones
two bones of the skull that form the roof and part of the sides and back of the skull
forehead
vertical surface of the frontal bone
ramus
vetical potion of the mandible
