A solution in which the concentration of solutes is less than that of the cell that resides in the solution (below strength)

isotonic solution

A solution with the same concentration of water and solutes as inside a cell, resulting in the cell retaining its normal shape because there is no net movement of water. (extra strength or same strength)

solute

A substance that is dissolved in a solution.

concentrated

Describes a solution that has a relatively large amount of dissolved solute

Diffusion

Movement of molecules from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.

dilute solution

a solution that contains a small amount of solute and a large amount of solvent

Osmosis

diffusion of H2O through a selectively permeable membrane
