What is Life?-Biology
What are the 8 characteristics of living?
We use the acronym "A HOG RACE"
"R"
Reproduction-All living things reproduce more of their own kind. Asexual reproduction- one parent produces copies of itself. Sexual Reproduction- two parents each contributes to production of offspring. (we are all connected by DNA)
"H"
Homeostasis-All living things regulate their internal environment so as to maintain a stable, constant condition. Example-sweat helps maintain body heat
"A"
Adaptation-All living things can change to meet their environment. Characteristics that allow organisms to survive and reproduce.
"A"
Adjust- All living things regulate themselves by responding to stimuli from their environment. (short term and not permanent changes).
"C"
Complex-All living things are complex and made of cells.
"E"
Getting Energy- Includes processes where organisms get energy from food/sunlight. Photosynthesis/Respiration. PHOTOSYNTHESIS- convert light energy, normally from the Sun, into chemical energy that can be later released to fuel the organisms' activities. RESPIRATION- defined as the transport of oxygen from the outside air to the cells within tissues, and the transport of carbon dioxide in the opposite direction.
"G"
Growth-All things get bigger and develop, increase in cell size or cell number (multiply)<----humans
"O"
Organized- Cell is the basic unit of life, chemical level, cellular level, tissue level, organ level, system level, organism.
