How did some Africans and Asians react to imperialism?
They strongly resisted Western expansion instigating many rebellions and revolts
Political/Nationalism
rival nations seized lands next to where other countries had colonies to keep them from expanding further
What are the six causes of the New Imperialism?
- Need for natural resources - New markets - Bankers invest their profits - An outlet for European's population - ships needed bases - in need for national security
What are the six motives of the new Imperialism?
- Economic - Military - Political/Nationalism - Religious - Humanitarian - Social Darwinism
What was the effect of it?
Brought modernization to their colonies but often at a high cost to the local people and their traditions
What are the two forms of Imperial Rule?
Direct, Indirect
Humanitarian
Doctors believed they had a duty to spread their knowledge of medicine and to help the sick
What is the third reason?
Europeans powers had many advantages: telegraphs, riverboat, machine guns, medicine to survive, steam driven warships, etc.
What is indirect rule?
Forced local rulers to run the colony as directed. The home country would then educate the people to spread their way of life
What is Imperialism?
Industrialized countries took control of non-industrialized countries
What is direct rule?
Involved sending officials and soldiers to control the colony
What happens in a protectorate?
Local rulers followed the advice of their European advisors on issues of trade or missionary activity
Social Darwinism
Many Europeans believed that they were superior to other races and imperialism was simply a matter of "survival of the fittest"
Religious
Missionaries felt the need to spread their ideas and religious in order to help their "little brothers"
What was the cause of Imperialism?
Need for resources for Industrial Revolution
What is the second reason?
Several older civilizations in Africa and the Middle East were in decline
What was the first reason in the rapid spread of Western Imperialism?
Soldiers, merchants, settlers, explorers, and missionaries participated in imperialism
How did SOME Westerns react to imperialism?
Some Westerners believed that colonialism was immoral; exact opposite of the democracy that was fought for at home.
Economic?
The IR required natural resources not available in the home countries; desire for new markets to sell goods
Military?
The need for naval bases for national security; islands were picked up in order to hold supplies for traveling vessels
