Nationalism was unifying people in the powerful nations, but it was dividing people in the weakening empires. European rivals were trying to maintain a balance of power while they were also trying to overpower the each other.
Why was the Balkan peninsular called a "powder keg" in the years prior to WWI?
No region was tenser than the Balkans before the great war Slavic people in Serbia wanted to unify all slavs but Austria-Hungary opposed giving up the largely. Slavic territories: Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Balkans were left just waiting for a spark to blow up.

Propoganda: tactics to get peoples to support the war; using signs and campaigns to persuade people. It was used to get people to participate in the war and give materials to the war.

Russia lost territory due to the Treaty, Austria-Hungary split into two, many countries were created out of exiting countries such as Poland. The German French brder was demilitarized to avoid future invasions. Central Europle was redrawn to reduce their power of the Austro Hungarian Empire.

Describe trench warfare. How did trench warfare lead to a stalemate?
Trenches were commonly used in WWI. They allowd the soilders to stay deep enough underground to avoid fire, and allowd for a look out at the opposing side. However the trenches were not very sanitary and had many diseases and issues. The soilders didn't have a lot of food and clean water. Trechwarfare led to a stalemate because both sides lost too many soilders and any further action would just lead to more and more problems and deadlier consequences.
Describe the conditions of war on the western front.
War on the western front was very dangerous. There were many diseases and nobody wanted to get out of the trenches to face what was to come. There was a shortage of food and clean water and many lives were lost because of it.
