Major stages of the invasion
a. The invasion began with the overnight arrival of paratroopers, soldiers who jumped out of airplanes using parachutes and landed behind enemy lines. Their objective was to destroy key German targets and take control of bridges. b. Next, thousands of planes dropped bombs on the German forces and warships began bombing the beaches from the water. Meanwhile, members of the French Resistance cut telephone lines and destroyed railroads. c. Finally, over 6,000 ships brought soldiers, weapons, tanks, and equipment to the Omaha and Utah beaches of Normandy.
