Yearbook End of Year Review

Digital camera

A camera that takes and stores photographs as digital files on an internal storage device like an SD card.

Server

A computer in a network that provides access to files for many users. Each of you has a Home folder on it.

Graphic

A design element which may be used to enhance the look of the book. Should relate to the theme idea.

JPEG

A file format used for images. It is best used for photographs and pictures with a lot of different colors.

library

A folder or file in which you organize and store your photos online that makes the photos accessible to all users.

QR code

A graphic code which can be read by a smartphone and will direct the browser on the phone to special content.

Font

A group of characters (letters, numbers, and symbols) that have a similar appearance...like Calibri or Arial.

Rule of thirds

A guide for image composition in which the frame is divided by and imaginary tic-tac-toe board. The subject should be placed in the area where the horizontal lines intersect with the vertical lines.

copyright

A law that protects a creator's ownership of and control over the work he/she creates. You must have permission to use the item.

contract

A legally enforceable agreement that goods or services will be delivered for a set price

Action shot

A non-posed photograph that is taken while an activity or event with movement happens.

ladder

A page tracking system that allows you to plan what is going on each page in the book. We could view all of our pages with this.

sponsor

A person who mentors and provides resources and support for the staffers and is accountable for success.

shipment

A product sent and delivered on an agreed date

Sidebar

A separate element, related to the page content, usually set to one side or across the bottom or top of a spread.

Presentation

A set of slides or handouts that contains information or photos you want to convey to an audience.

Speech bubble

A shape containing words spoken by a person, usually with a tail that points to the speaker; also called a word balloon.

animation

A simulation of movement added to graphics or text in a presentation.

Pixel

A single dot or square of color that forms part of an image. If you zoom in on an raster image these are visible.

transition

A special effect that marks how one slide moves off and the next slide moves onto the screen. How one slide CHANGES to another.

Section

A specific area of the yearbook that contains related pages like : Fine Arts, Sports, Administration, Academics, Clubs and Organizations & Grade Levels.

Autofocus

Ability of a lens and camera to focus on its own without the photographer zooming or adjusting.

Texture

An *element* of art and photography that refers to how things feel or how they LOOK like they might *feel* which makes it more interesting.

white space

Any area on the spread that does not contain photos, text, graphics or other elements. It should be located on the outer edges of the spread.

Copy

Any of the TEXT on the spread, including headlines, stories, captions.

Infographic

Chart, graph, map or other illustration that explains information that might be too complicated to share in paragraph form.

Spine

Connects the front and back covers. Usually has the name of the school, volume number and year.

Element

Copy, headline, art, photos - ANYTHING to be put on a layout.

public domain

Creative work that's not copyrighted and therefore FREE for you to use whenever you want.

Crop

Cutting or removing unwanted areas from a picture to get the most important part.

distribution

Delivery of products to customers. Delivery of the yearbooks to the buyers.

DPI

Dots Per Inch. Also known as printer resolution. The number of dots of color a printer is capable of producing in a certain amount of space.

Caption

Explanatory text that not only identifies the who, what, where, when, why and how of a picture, but also tells something extra.

Bleed

Extending picture beyond the edge of the page on one or more sides leaving no external margin.

Spread

Facing pages which are linked conceptually as well as visually. All pages, except page 1 and the last page of the book, are part of a spread.

Eyeline

Formed by arranging photos or other page elements to form an even band of white space used to visually link a spread and draw your eyes to the main part.

blurry

Fuzzy, unfocused, unclear, indistinct photo that should not be used.

Repetition photo

Intentional repeated element in photograph for emphasis and interest....like lines or shapes.

Division Pages

Introductory pages to the different sections of the book. Usually used in larger books of 100 pages or more.

Headline

Large, sometimes bold type which attracts the reader and gives information from an article.

End section

Last section of the book which wraps it up--often dedicated to the yearbook staff.

Grid design

Layout system using not only columns, but smaller grids to give you more options in design and a way to align photos.

Horizontal Rule lines

Lines of varying point size that can be used graphically to link or separate elements or draw attention to elements.

Table of contents

Listing of divisions and the pages on which they begin. Usually used in large yearbooks of 100 pages or more.

End sheets

Located inside front and back covers. Helps to secure cover to inside pages. Can be blank or printed.

Flat

One side of a signature spread. There are two flats in a signature spread.

Folio

Page number and/or spread identification, usually positioned in the bottom corners of the page.

Signature or Autograph pages

Pages on which students can sign each other's books.

Photo

Picture taken with a camera.

layout template

Pre-designed page with picture areas, caption areas, headline area and text area already in place. Pictures, text and graphics can be dropped into place on the template.

Clip Art

Pre-made illustrations, drawings, pictures, borders and other graphics that can be inserted into a page

Guidelines

Rules for design: 1. Every spread should have a headline. 2. Every spread should have a dominant photo. 3. There should be a minimum of 4-7 photos per spread (more if you use a sidebar).

Mosaic design

Similar to the design of mosaic tile, with different rectangular shapes and sizes fitted together. Similar to a collage.

Staffer

Someone who works for a news or publication organization: a reporter, editor, photographer, etc.

Mug Shot

Student or Staff Portrait, a photo of a person's head and shoulder area only. School photos are sometimes called this.

theme

The central idea or concept; the narrative or pictorial thread that unifies the various parts of the yearbook. Ours was "We".

Lifetouch

The company that prints and publishes your yearbook.

Gutter

The fold between two pages where the pages are bound into the cover.

External margins

The green outside margin of a page as established by the layout form. When you moved an element near it, it showed up.

Fontsize

The height of characters measured in points

Dominant photo

The largest photo on the spread. Should be about 2 times larger than any other photo.

deadline

The latest time or date by which something must be completed or submitted

cover

The outside of the yearbook, usually a hard surface printed with the name of the school, the name of the book, the theme and the year.

editing

The process of making changes, correcting errors, and making your project visually appealing to your audience--the customer.

upload

The process of transferring your digital images FROM your camera to a website or computer. It is sending a file from your computer to another system.

Resolution

The quality of an image. The higher the number such as 300dpi, the better the photo will print out or enlarge.

Pica

Unit of measurement in the printing industry, equal to 1/6 of an inch. In other words, there are 6 picas to an inch.

Point

Unit of measurement in the printing industry, equal to 1/72 of an inch. This generally refers to the size of a font....like 24 pt.

Columns

Vertical areas on a layout sheet. Most design is based on 6-column or 8-column layouts.

Quote

Words "pulled" from a source that enhances the photo spread to convey a message

Yearbook

a book published annually containing details and photographs of the previous year, usually for a school or campus organization

3 dimensional

a formatting style that adds shadows or depth to text or photos, making them appear more realistic or appear to stand out from the page

Flash

a light that is used to make it easier to take pictures in the shade or at night

marketing

a sales plan, any activities that encourage customers to make purchases:, A group of activities designed to encourage sales.

Assignment

a task such as a photo shoot, a page spread or an editing duty to be completed by a staffer by a deadline

Photographic effect/filter

a way of changing the appearance of a photo such as making a color photo black and white, softening an image or creating lighting that was not there in the original

collaboration

act of working jointly; working together on a project

sound

audio effects like music that are added to a presentation

Candid photo

photo taken of somebody, when they didn't know it was being taken

Long glass

refers to a telephoto lens that magnifies the subjects in an image and creates the enlarging effect as if you are closer to the subject
