moving average

(also called the rolling average) is a popular time‐series smoothing method that is often found in the field of finance as well as elsewhere.

-

You can choose from among the following forecast models:

- Automatic - Automatic Without Seasonality - Custom

there are 2 ways to persuade people

1. conventional rhetoric 2. through story

story telling

1. power of repetition 2. beginning, middle, and end which embed things in our memory in a way that we can later recall and retell the story to someone else

Tableau Online

A cloud platform with functionality similar to Tableau Server. It is hosted by Tableau and is provided as a Software‐as‐a‐Service (SaaS) solution.

Box Plot

Adds one or more box plots to your view.

these models yield different results:

Automatic = Tableau tries to model both a long‐term trend and seasonal variation- Automatic Without Seasonality = Tableau only models the trend Custom = You can specify manually what type of model to use for the trend and for the seasonality.

Bump Chart

Bump charts are a popular and effective solution for visualizing changes in rankings over time. For example, you can visualize how the ranking of product categories changes over a year. Seasonal fluctuations may also become apparent when the data is aggregated at the month level.

calculations

In Tableau you can create additional fields by defining a formula that derives the information you need from your data source fields and/or other functions and operators.

Analytics Pane

Tableau's advanced analytics tools can be found in the Analytics pane, which sits behind the Data pane on the left side of the screen. The tools are grouped as follows:

Gantt Mark Type

The Gantt mark type draws a line at the value of each month's profit. - Putting negative profit on size essentially stretches each Gantt bar's height to line up with the start of the previous bar - note that negative bars need to grow upwards, and positive bars need to grow downwards, hence the need to size by negative profit to flip that.

tableau Server:

This is an analytical platform for organizations that either run on the organization's own servers (on‐premises) or in the cloud (via AWS, Azure, or the Google Cloud Platform). Administrators can restrict access according to user type.

Cluster Analysis

- A cluster is a collection of data points with similar properties. - Cluster analysis helps you find such groupings in your data. - A classic use case comes from the field of marketing, where clustering is often used to define different customer segments. - The clustering tool in Tableau uses the widely used k‐means algorithm -Simply put, the method works by assigning n number of observations to k number of clusters, so that each observation is part of the cluster with the nearest cluster mean.

Model

- Average with 95% CI: Adds one or more sets of average lines with distribution bands to your view. The bands show the 95% confidence interval around the data's mean. - Median with 95% CI: Adds one or more sets of median lines with distribution bands to your view. The bands show the 95% confidence interval around the data's median. - Trend Line: Adds one or more trend lines to your view - Forecast: Adds a forecast to your view - Cluster: Runs a clustering algorithm

Forecasts

- Forecasting models extrapolate future values of a time series based on its historical values, allowing you to attempt to predict the evolution of a measure. - Many different mathematical models can be used for such endeavors, each with its own advantages and drawbacks.

Custom

- Reference Line: Adds one or more lines reflecting the value of additional measures, calculations, or parameters. - Reference Band: Adds one or more bands reflecting the values of additional measures, calculations, or parameters. - Distribution Band: Adds a shaded band showing the distribution of the chart's data along an axis, as measured by percentages, percentiles, quantiles, or the standard deviation. - Box Plot: Adds one or more customizable box plots to your view.

Visualizing the 80/20 Rule

- The Pareto principle (also known as the 80/20 rule, the law of the vital few, or the principle of factor sparsity) states that, for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes - Bring out a constant line from the analytics tab, drop on CNTD(Item) and set the value to .2 for 20 - Bring out a constant line from the analytics tab, drop on SUM(Sales)∆ and set the value to .8 for 80%

Tableau automatically sets the following:

- The forecast length - The aggregation and range of the historical data going into the forecast model - The model equation - The prediction interval and its confidence level

vertical logic

- all information on a given slide is self reinforcing - the content reinforces the title and vice versa - the words reinforce the visual and vice versa - there isn't any extraneous or unrelated information

Tableau's forecasting tool uses what is called exponential smoothing.

- in such models, more recent data points are assigned greater weights than older observations. -They work reasonably well to capture both long‐term trends and any potential seasonality that may be present in the time series.

Lines

- show a certain threshold value, a benchmark, or a ceiling in your visualization, you drag the item Constant Line onto the view. You will be able to choose the value of the constant. - Average Line, on the other hand, will add a line determined by the arithmetic mean of all the marks in the chosen partition (for the whole table, for each individual pane, or for each cell, as defined by the dimensions in the view). - The Reference Line tool will let you add a line whose position is determined by another measure, a calculated field, or a parameter.

acts

- the first act sets up the story - the second act makes up the bulk of the story - the third act resolves the story and its subplots

waterfall chart

A waterfall chart shows the running total of a particular measure (usually with positive and negative values) over a dimension. - It shows the relationship of each dimension member against the running total - how each member is contributing to the overall total, either positively or negatively. - These can be useful when you want to track something that goes up and down a lot.

Constant Line

Adds a line to the chart, intersecting the axis at a fixed value of your choosing

Median with Quartiles

Adds one or more sets of median lines with distribution bands to your view.

Average Line

Adds one or several average lines to your view, based on the arithmetic mean of the chart's data

fields

Fields are the columns available from your data sources. You can double click them to include them in your formula, or simply type the name in.

functions

Functions provide specific functionalities and computations. Tableau has a library of functions that you can readily use. If you are unfamiliar with these, you can click on a function name and its name, syntax, and an example will show up in the right hand descriptions pane.

Tableau Public

Often dubbed the "YouTube for data," this is an online platform for sharing data visualizations with the world. With social media components such as favoriting and following, it is used by Tableau enthusiasts to share with and learn from each other. It is also used by newsrooms and corporate communication departments to share data stories with their wider audiences.

Online and Server

Organizations that use Tableau Online or Tableau Server do so because they believe large parts of their workforce require access to up‐to‐date data sources and dashboards.

parameters

Parameters are user-driven values. You can include your user's input in the formula, and allow users to change the input via a parameter control on a worksheet or dashboard.

Totals

Totals: Adds subtotals, column grand totals, or row grand totals to your view.

-

a good description can be very useful for teammates or other colleagues who will work with this dashboard.

the three-act structure can serve as a model for us when it comes to communicating in general

conflict and tension are an integral part of story

sharing

it is faster and easier to make your dashboards available via the web browser, using one of three Tableau products built for this purpose: Tableau Online, Tableau Server, or Tableau Public.

-

it is recommended that you always use dashboards, not sheets, even if you only want to show a single chart.

-

series data, ensure that your view contains a time or date field as well as a measure.

-

tableau automatically suggests a number of distinct clusters.

Aristotle introduced a basic but profound idea:

that story has a clear beginning, middle, and end - setup, conflicts and resolution

horizontal logic

you can read just the slide title of each slide throughout your deck and together these snippets tell the overarching story you want to communicate
