-after recognizing an ethical problem/dilemma exists clearly understand the nature of the problem -consider the various justifications for the behavior/conduct under question -support conclusions base on ethical principle within the context of the solution
understand how criminal justice is engaged in a process of coercion
-agents of CJ are routinely involved in forcing people to do things that they don't want to do or preventing them from doing things they want to do. -these agents need necessary authority -decisions to exercise or not exercise this authority can give rise to ethical dilemmas - potential for abuse
become more personally responsible
-become better equipped to recognize these ethical situations -develop a confidence to respond to difficult choices especially under circumstances that require choices between loyalty and organizational and legal requirements

-humanistic perspective -common good -being able to see beyond the immediate situation -considering the long-range impact of our actions -Altruism- the belief in or practice of disinterested and selfless concern for the well being of others
