5.4/5.5 Biology power notes
Advantages to species
Can be more efficient if organisms well suited to environment. All organisms can potentially reproduce. Organisms do not need to spend resources finding or attracting a mate.
. Explain how mitosis differs from Binary fission.
Mitosis differs from binary fission because mitosis occurs exclusively in eukaryotic cells and prokaryotic cells, which lack a nucleus, divide by a process called binary fission.
Binary fission
asexual reproduction of a single-celled organism by division into two roughly equal parts
Asexual reproduction
creation of genetically identical offspring from one parent organism; does not involve fusion of gametes
Vegetative reproduction
modification of a stem or underground structure from the parent organism; new organism often remains connected
What are the Disadvantages of Asexual Reproduction?
no genetic diversity ,don't handle big changes in environment well (less adaptable) and if there is a problem with the parent cell then there will be a problem with the offspring.
What are the advantages of Asexual Reproduction?
numbers(exponential growth),no variation ,no struggle of finding a mate ,more efficient and keep genes out
Fragmentation
parent organism splits into pieces that can each grow into a new organism
Budding
small projection grows on surface of parent and forms a new organism
What are Kinases and Cyclins ?
the move of phosphate groups from one cell to another (phosphorylate) when you phosphorylate things they become higher energy. Cyclins create and destroys things rapidly.
Disadvantages to species
All organisms respond same way to environment. Organisms may lack adaptability to survive in changing conditions.
