William Lloyd Garrison

As the publisher of the Liberator, this man was one of the first white Americans to demand the immediate freeing of slaves. Started his own paper to deliver an anti-slavery message to free slaves without any cost

Frederick Douglass

Born into slavery, this great writer and speaker escaped to the North where he worked to achieve the freedom of slaves through nonviolent means. Although this man at first joined William Lloyd Garrison, he later broke with Garrison over the issue of violence and started his own antislavery newspaper, The North Star.

What new restrictions were placed on African Americans?

Antebellum

Combines a root that means "before" with one that means "War" but is usually used specifically to mean "before the American Civil War"

Insituted a gag rule. Abolitionist turned to violence.

What new arguments were made to support slavery?

It's in the bible. Slavery actually benefitted the blacks. Slavery and christianity could co-exist.

Rural Slaves

Lived on huge plantations. Men, women, and children worked from dawn to dusk.

Aboliton

Means "a complete doing away with", which is how it came to be the name of the movement to outlaw slavery.

Emancipation

Means "a setting free". It's an antonym for restraint or enslavement.

Nat Turner

Remained in the south because he felt that he was called by God to organize his fellow slaves in a fight for freedom. Was captured, tried, convicted, and hanged for his part in a slave rebellion.

Urban Slaves

Slaves worked in mills or on ships. Slaves that were skilled worked as blacksmiths or carpentry. Worked for mining and lumber.

David Walker

This free African American took the extreme position of encouraging slaves to fight for freedom rather than wait for god. Published a book to advise blacks to fight for freedom instead of waiting for slave owners to end slavery

Gag Rule

This prevented congressional discussion of antislavery petitions between 1836 and 1844

Free Blacks

Worked unsupervised and had more freedom. Better clothed and fed. Enjoy more privileges. and worked in factories.
