8.5 Heat in Chemical Reactions
Are reactions that require heat to start endothermic?
The requirement of heat to start reacting does not indicate which type of reaction it is. Both types can require heat, but only endothermic reactions need heat to KEEP going.
Characteristics of an endothermic reaction?
1) Potential energy is gained during the reaction. 2)Requires heat to keep reaction going
What are the characteristics of an exothermic reaction?
1) Potential energy is lost during the reaction. 2)Products are more stable 3) Does not require heat to keep the reaction going
What is activation energy?
Activation energy is the amount of energy needed to start a chemical reaction.
What is an Endothermic reaction?
An endothermic reaction is a reaction that absorbs heat.
What is an Exothermic reaction?
An exothermic reaction is a reaction that releases heat.
What is heat of reaction?
Heat of reaction is the amount of heat energy produced by a reaction.
What are the reason(s) for chemical reactions?
So the products can enter a more stable energy state than the reactants and heat is released
What are hydrocarbons?
They are compounds containing only hydrogen and carbon.
