why u hur

- As seen on my resume, I've done a couple different roles and they were all great, but what I truly believe is best for me in my career path is a business oriented position -not necessarily one that is invest banking - but one that i can apply my skills of people communication and results oriented mentality, in an environment that is fast paced, always changing and exciting and one that i can constantly learn new things while enhancing past skills. Leadership / Team Examples

: Last year, when working as a Lyft Campus Ambasador, I led a team of four DukeStudents on campus. As a part of the job, I had to come up with and execute at least one on-campus activity and one social media effort per week. A member of the team was, to put it simply, not pulling her weight. She wouldn't show up to the events, post the necessary social media content or join the check-in calls. The other three team members came to me and indicated their annoyance with the siatuaon. While I could tell it was unfair, I waned to make sure she had a chance to explain herself. I took her out to coffee and she told me about how busy her schedule had been. Rather than immediately accusing her, I checked in with her to make sure nothing was awry. After learning that giving deadlines earlier, checking meeting times with team and planning events further in advance. i think this demonstrates how i lead by thinking about others

BREAD Process

B- Brief Understanding clients needs, (or essentially what the client is trying to achieve) R-research process Understanding the market and identifying expert advisors Efficient research, not deep academic dive: Looking to get up to speed on industries you've never seen before, Associates vet those experts by contacting them and assessing if their expertise matches the client's knowledge gap. E- Engaging advisors Act more like detective, id'd 15-20, then have to go find what boards they're a part of, who secretary is, online stalking A- Assessing them really want to Ensure credibility and build trust with them Only have 10 minutes to assess whether suitable information partner That's what assessing part is all about, and requires Talking to someone and remaining on the same footing For WIlliam: have to be able to have conversations with very senior level people in an industry Something Will Deseren really emphasized as a benefit of working at Alphasights; get to talk to top level executives in such a wide array of industries Within a few days at AlphaSights, you'll be exposed to a myriad of career options that you may not have been previously aware of. AlphaSights provides insight into multiple industries, whether it's finance, banking, or even social impact. Exposure to these industries allows associates to better understand their career options. Perhaps, after speaking with someone at a private equity fund, you realize that their day-to-day role matches your career objectives. That's a significant piece of knowledge that would have remained undiscovered had it not been for your internship at AlphaSights. .. blog post "AlphaSights entrusted in me, very early on, control of an entire process that had direct revenue-generating impact on the firm. (BREAD process really breaks down what exactly would be up to)" D- Delivery About packaging those statements into a short memo to send to client Client either decides they want to speak with them or give feedback on what direction they want to go Strong client relationship is valuable at this stage, also where the sales and neogtiaon element comes into play Have 5-6 people we think you should talk to That's where sales and negotiation element is Need to explain why each advisor is worth speaking to

Fav Class

Curious in the classroom - like to be solving some sort of problem or coming to a solution. Intellectually I enjoy taking rigorous discussion based classes to challenge my beliefs and myself. Classes I take are on history, and evaluating media and visuals within my major. My favorite class I took was last year, a class for my major. It was called Theories of Visual and Media Studies. The class was twelve students and on the first day we were randomly split into three groups of four student teams. Every class, we would be given a series of papers, and all of the groups would come to class ready to present their findings in a concise manner in a powerpoint presentation, and then be prepared to defend their ideas and answer questions. I loved that 1) this class primary rested on analyzing and communicating ideas in discussions 2) it was a class that was based on a team-setting (found it more fun, and also more intellectually stimulating 3) loved that with this class the students were the teachers. I liked being given a lot of responsibility and rising to a challenge.

How do you decide what to purchase? 2What is your rough monthly or annual spend on these supplies? 3How do you choose an organization to purchase from? 4Do you see your purchasing habits changing in the future?

what will be most difficult

Learning new markets that im completely unfamiliar with, but I'm a hard worker and quick learner and can easily adapt to new situations. My hope is that there will be a steep learning curve with the associate role that will help me quickly adapt and research and learn new markets more errficiently

Why

Looking for a High Growth firm that places a lot of emphasis of the skill development of its employees. -AlphaSights was on the Crain's list of fastest growing companies in NY with 1,273% growth over 3 years which shows amazing opportunities... One of the fastest growing businesses in NYC and thus I want to be able to work in a company where I can grow with it as well be a part of an expanding organization. •I love working with people and the Associate position seems like an incredible opportunity to create win-win-win situations and give me valuable experience. Specifically, The summer associate position is of interest to me because of the range of important skills I would be able to build upon, as well as the large amount of research I would be able to conduct and the large amount of knowledge I would be able to gather. I spoke to Tanya Riordon, who was a Summer associate and will be accepting a full time offer post graduation, and Will Deseren, who is an Associate in Capital Markets. Their evaluations of the company really stood out to me. Everything he said was extremely positive, and that positivity was really infectious. 1) Tanya really emphasized how much learning about speaking to people on the phone and maintaining professional communication was gained. In high school, I ran phone banking session for Planner Parenthood as a prt of the Maine Action Team, and at Duke, I am a part of PP@Duke, where I run marketing, but also organize and partake in various phone banking efforts. I like talking to people on the phone and getting to know them to address their needs. This is a skill I would really like to continue to develop. 2) When talking with Will, he emphasized the unique position of having such an intimate touchpoint and perspective with business within the associate role for me, great starting point to learn about various industries and make connections everywhere which provides an unparalleled opportunity to develop professional communication skills. I think it is important to know how to communicate in a professional setting no matter what career someone chooses to pursue. Also, I understand that as an associate, I would have multiple projects at the same time, which would help me further develop my time and project management skills which are also extremely valuable for a career. Overall, I believe at alpha sights I would be working in an industry where interpersonal skills are neccesary, there is a fast-paced workplace that requires organization but also a high decree of flexibility and i would be at a company that would be testing my skills as a communicator while also allowing me to grow into leadership roles

Rate and Scheduling

So as I mentioned, we are happy to compensate you for your time. We can offer you a bottle of wine, a monetary compensation equal to our industry rate, or a donation to the charity of your choice. Whats your typical rate when you work with other companies like us? Our industry standard is 200 an hour. (If don't agree, ask respectfully, "is there any way you could meet me in the middle?") Don't let them go out without talking to client Make sure you know how much the client is paying us, so we know what we have to work with 6. Scheduling Ok awesome, so before we wrap up I just want to clarify some scheduling stuff so we can make things flow smoothly. Where are you based?

Pitch AS

So basically AlphaSights is a global research firm that works on behalf of our clients, which includes private equity groups, hedge funds, strategy consultancy firms, to help connect them with the best knowledge to do their job. Typically, our clients are coming to us because they don't have direct experience with the industry they're dealing with, so we help to connect them with experts such as yourself for a 45 min to an hour long phone consultation to help get them up to speed on the topic. We've found typically its much more useful to get on the phone with real people rather than for people to do countless hours of online research. Of course, we're happy to compensate you for your time, so it ends up being a great deal for both of you guys. So I'm calling you today because I'm working on behalf of_______ looking into _____to get better understanding of it, specificallyy by talking to _____. I think you would be a valuable resource for our client. Do you have any more questions for me?

Weaknesses

Sometimes I can be impatient. I like to get things done quickly and go places quickly. Here in Portugal, where being obscenely late is a cultural norm, I am definitely being pushed in this area haha. As well, I volunteer and work with children at school biweekly, and have gained a greater appreciation for different learning styles and methods of accomplishing tasks through these expereinces, which have definetly helped me learn to respect and honor other's styles and to see that my way of doing things quickly is absolutely not neccesiarliy the best ay and that instead i can learn from other's methods. how exercise this? remind myself of end goals. as long as deadlines are being met, it truly does not matter. the pace is inconsequential and i have to remind myself to not sweat how others are doing thins Sometimes don't as for help soon enough. consistently thinking that others are busy and I do not need to bother them. for instance, as rework for my job this past summer, my manger had me create graphic for the opening event. I wanted to demonstrate my skills and capabilities, so I spent hours making a graphic that scrolled every corp member's names using my own design. When I sent the product to my manager, she was impressed with my work, but instead wished for a still image instead. IN this instance, by simply asking keys questions, we could have saved time and energy, and created a solution that fit more closely with my team's needs. I have learned a lot about asking for help from my teachers in improving my class work and how beneficial that can be.

Me

Tell about yourself: Okay hi! So my name is Kate. I am from Falmouth, Maine, which is right outside of Portland, and if that is meaningless, haha, I am about an hour and a half north of Boston. Being from Maine is a huge part of who I am; I am something that seeks and active and balanced lifestile. I now am a junior at Duke University. I weg different to duke to do somethinnt and challenge myself. Being one of less than ten students from my state at Duke definetly has done just that for me! I am studying abroad right now in Lisbon, Portugal, where I am taking classes on langauge, culture and marketing and I am loving every second of being in a breathtaking place, living in a city and having the opportunity to travel around Europe for the first time! At Duke, my studies are pretty multifaceted and I believe widely applicable. I am a visual and media studies major, so the bulk of my work consists of evlauting, through written, visual and oral methods, the ways in which media nd visuals affect society as a whole. My major has definetly hieghed my interest in visualizing an creating dynamic branding experiences. Beyond that, my school work consists of making presentations and writing papers, which are definetlys skills I am confident in and also continually improving. I am also a Psychology minor, where I have gained some more analytical skills, been exposed to a personal passion of research and just generally aimed a better understanding of how people think and why they do what they do. This has also led to me working a a Research Assistant at the Duke Center for Eating Disorders has also been awesome, I not only get to help with studies, but also I also get to edit papers, research and conduct literature reviews — has been one of my favorite experiences at Duke thus far Finally, I am pursuing a certificate (between a major and minor in terms of requirements) in Markets and Management Studies (which simply put is the interdisciplinary study of business and marketing). It includes classes on business theory, entreurpeuniship and management as well as global trade and markets. I chose this certificate because I know I am interested in business and wanted to get more exposure given that Duke has no business related undergraduate majors! This past year, I was a brand and growth ambassador or both Lacroix and Lyft (Lyt for fall semester and Lacroix for spring). Both experiences, beyond bolstering my interest in marketing, were great learning experiences in terms of working with a team, leading a team, time-management while taking classes, generating ideas and organization of events as dell as just maintaining clear and timely communication with managers. This past summer, I was an Operations Associate on the Communications Team with Teach for American in Houson. Planning and executing large-scale events was a new skill that I gained this summer. In the process of these, I learned a lot about effective communication, brainstorming ideas and excessively planning for things. Running the social media accounts and writing blog posts was also a part of my responsibilities. As a larger member o the operations team, a lot of the work we did involved managing the day-to-day logistics of nearly a thousand TFA incoming corps members - which meant not only getting data and having conversations for feedback, but developing and executing solutions as swiftly as possible to boost satisfaction ratings and sharpen processes. These experiences were so amazing in helping me understand what I want in a future career. I learned that 1) I love work that is fast-paced and high energy setting. 2) I like to be doing team-oriented projects and 3) I love having constantly changing projects and juggling multiple tasks at once Alpha sights not only offers this environment of solving problems, researching and connecting people, but also allows fits into my longer term career plan for development of business skills like sales, negotiation and excellent client service. I think ti would not only be a great fit, but also critical to my professional growth.

easiest

The people communications involved with connecting people. This has always come pretty natural to me and i am drawn to be social and outgoing and not being super nervous about approaching and meeting new people, regardless of their status

why duke

While stressful at times, you're surrounded by some of the brightest kids which naturally creates an atmosphere which encourages you to work hard and develop great leaning abilities. Challenging yet supporting. -surrounded by extrememly passionate students to make you passionate

Failure

a lot of what I worked on this sumemr with event palnning and running the institute's oeprations had to do with careful planning to ensure things woutld run smoothly and efficiently. For the first event I got to plan, it was basically like a huge field day for hundreds ofteachers, imagine lots of games and events but needing the trams to rotate at correct times with the right flow so everyone played everyone and got fair breajs. Essentially, with the careful eye I had in making sure things were going to run smoothly and correctly, I made some choices that in hindshight were not well thought out. Some fo the events I had directed to be organized accross the street, not thinking about the disabled pariticpants in tht eevents. Due to this hindshight, which I recognized while giving the team a run-through of the event in the morning, I had to organize the moving of 5 events to more accessible locations. Let me tell you, if I learned anything form carrying dun tanks and buckets of water for hours that morning, it was that it is always crucial to prioritie people over the process. Maybe the events would have worked out time-wise and noise-wise slightly better in the first location, but with the adjustments amde, I was maximing the amount of happiness the people involved were able to get out of the event.

Career Development

associate→ manager→ VP Really depends on your drive, ambition, energy Associate role and exposure serves as a springboard to a successful career in business - starting with effective commercial execution at the Associate level, through people and client management at the Manager level, to team and business leadership at the VP level. short term: gain comprehensive training, be dynamic member of a team, use wide variety of skills (verbal/written communication, research etc.), long term: gain responsibility to where I can lead and manage a team

Base Salary or Commission Based

learned in school that: people are motivated by mastery, purpose, and autonomy rather than financial incentives. And I know that often financial incentives can actually decrease motivation when it comes to a job that requires a lot of cognitive ability. commission -> • Commission based! I feel that commission based payment fuels my competitive drive and supplies additional motivation to do the best work that I can. • Furthermore, I'm a risk taker and I want to be rewarded for taking calculated risks.

feedback

manager this past summer indicated that an area for growth for me within team could be catalyzing the growth and development of others. Prior to this meeting, I had taken charge with taking on a lot of responsablities, because I knew I could complete them quickly and because I felt I was capable. After this conversation, I made an effort to gently coach other team members through projects that might not be in their immediate skill sets: like creating flyers, graphics and video editing for a documentary project we made. This was a great learning opportunity not just for my coworkers but also for me, since by spreading taks more fairly, I was able to take on new projects for myself as well as increase the time I was able to spend on more pertinent tasks (has to do with weakness of being impatient) manager this summer noted that I could speak up the I want additional help. consistently thinking that others are busy and I do not need to bother them. for instance, as rework for my job this past summer, my manger had me create graphic for the opening event. Learned from Mistake

moving ahead without group, got too excited, learned that need to value every team member and team success. I am in a class for my major called Theories of visual media studies right now. For the class, the students are essentially the teachers, and so on the first day the class of twelve was split up into three random groups and every class your group gives a presentation on and breaks down a theoretical paper for the class with a visual slideshow. Natrually, we divide the work evenly. The first week of giving presentations our paper was on the history and implications of the color Indian Yellow in the politics of looking. I chose the section on the racial implications of the color's removal and got so interested in my assigned part... as a result of my over exuberance on the topic and excitement with the new class, mms section was far too long and my ideas were more centered on my own research than the paper's actual content. When our group presented, my section seemed out of place and almost as if I had moved ahead without my group. I quickly recognized this flaw in my execution and was like okay let's bounce back form this. I wanted my teammates, who I did not know well at the time, to not resent me for this obvious error. I scheduled a brunch with my group the next day and got to know them so we would develop trust and a good bond before getting serious about our work. There, we also made a more concrete plan about each week's division of labor and organization of presentations and made sure to schedule and hour before our presentations to make our work mesh well. now in projects, always make mien as good as possible but also fit with team work

• AlphaSights is a global information services firm approaching 300 employees. • Clients approach AlphaSights looking for a particular bit of information necessary to their business. • AlphaSights connects these clients to specific industry experts and facilitates their communication so the client can quickly gain the accurate information needed to conduct their business. • These clients are usually business leaders including but not limited to investment banks, private equity firms, hedge funds, and corporate decision makers. • The Associate's role is to connect these clients to the known industry leaders and to research new professionals who could be contacted. One of my favorite intangibles that I discovered while doing my due diligence the company is that AlphaSights will do whatever it takes make the connection happen (Fast-paced: 48 hour turnaround for 90% of queries) between the client and the expert and that is the type of tenacity that I have as well.

What looking for

• I want to work in a growing competitive environment. • I want to work in a place where personal skills are a necessity and allow for great relationships with clients but also great relationships around the office. • I like a fast paced setting • But most of all I want a company that's going to push me, make me a better communicator and employee and allow me chances to grow into leadership roles as I become more comfortable.
