Alternatives to War
Isolationism
A national policy of avoiding involvement in world affairs
Appeasement
A policy of making concessions to an aggressor in the hopes of avoiding war.
Diplomacy
The practice of conducting negotiations between countries. Often thought of as the peaceful alternative to violence
Blockade
a war measure that isolates some area of importance (often to prevent goods or people from entering or leaving) to the enemy
Embargo (Quarantine)
an official ban on trade or other commercial activity with a particular country.
Deterrence
is the threat of force in order to discourage an opponent from taking an unwelcome action. This can be achieved through the threat of retaliation (deterrence by punishment) or by denying the opponent's war aims (deterrence by denial).

restrictions intended to enforce international law
