Explain the difference between renewable resources and nonrenewable resources.

Renewable resources are produced in nature more rapidly than it is consumed by humans while nonrenewable ones are slower.

Why are human geographers interested in ecosystems involving interaction of humans with the biosphere and abiotic spheres?

A belief that the physical environment caused social development.

Cultural Ecology

A geographic approach that emphasizes human-environment relationships.

What are the types of climates geographers identify? (by letter and name)

A: Tropical B: Dry C: Warm Mid-latitude D: Cold Mid-latitude E: Polar

In what major way does climate influence human activities? (Give an example)

Climate influences food production because different plants thrive in different climates. For example, rice requires lots of water while wheat doesn't.

3 Pillars of Sustainability- Environment (focus on conservation vs. preservation)

Conservation- The sustainable use and management of Earth's natural resources to meet human needs such as food, medicine, and recreation. Preservation- The maintenance of resources in their present condition, with as little human impact as possible.

For example- soil: What are the two major problems with which geographers are concerned as far as soil is concerned?

Erosion: Erosion is when the rain and wind washes/blows away the soil. Erosions are caused by poor choices made from farmers-choosing steep slopes, plowing more, and not plant crops whose roots help bind the soil. Depletion of Nutrients: Nutrients deplete when plants withdraw more nutrients than natural processes can replace. Each plant withdraws a certain amount and restore others. To prevent this from happening, farmers can plant different crops every year.

3 Pillars of Sustainability- society

Humans make use of resources to met survivable needs.

Explain two major criticisms about sustainability

1. Critics believe that it is already too late to discuss about sustainability because the the world surpassed the sustainability level in 1980. 2. Resources don't have a limit/maximum. Instead, they drastically change unpredictably over time.

What are the two major misuses of resources geographers observe?

1. Humans deplete nonrenewable resources-petroleum, natural gas, coal 2. Humans destroy renewable resources in ways that ensure resource availability in the future.

Environmental determinism

19th-20th century approach to the study of geography which argued that the general laws sought by human geographers could be found in the physical sciences. geography was therefore the study of how the physical environment caused human activities.

3 Pillars of Sustainability- economy

Natural resources that acquire a monetary value through exchange in marketplace.

Possibilism

The theory that the physical environment may set limits on human actions, but people have the ability to adjust to the physical environment and choose a course of action from many alternatives.

Define sustainability:

The use of Earth's renewable and nonrenewable natural resources in ways that do not constrain resource use in the future.
