Both Constantin Brancusi and Auguste Rodin created stone sculptures, each titled The Kiss, to express an idea related to this act of love. Each is stylistically different, but Brancusi chose to leave the original block of stone mostly intact. Why would Brancusi have chosen to do this? How does this change his expression of the kiss compared to Rodin's?

Brancusi used the idea of permanence and unification in this work by carving two figures out of one stone. by fusing the two figures into one solid stone mass, Brancusi is able to communicate the timelessness of love. Rodin's The kiss is a work portraying two lovers with passion and energy. This shows more of the action of love rather than love as a whole.

Is it possible to create a work of art that is completely random, or is our dependence on pattern so strong that such a work would be incomprehensible? Explain the reasons behind your answer.

I would say that because of background influences that are often unaccounted for, it is quite difficult to say that any artwork is completely random. This is simply because we as humans are not random beings, we like order and structure, for the most part.

Thinking of what you have learned about the communicative qualities of line, why might Carolyn Davidson have made the choices she did when designing the Nike logo? Choose two other logos and explain how they use communicative line the values of an organization.

when we look at the emphasis placed on lines in art, vertical lines convey the strength of government or the stability of a financial institution, Logos for vacation resorts often feature horizontal lines to communicate peaceful repose, and diagonals can express the excitement and energy of athletic activity. this is exactly what NIKE stands for. the logo for FED-EX was designed in order that the white space between the e and the x would create an arrow, implying speed. along with this the parallel lines in the logo give a sense of controlled motion. Adidas is another example of an athletics company that used diagonal lines to convey the energy of athletic activity.
