Visual Way of Living

Ideal Deaf Space are open. Lighting is bright but not glaring. Seating is arranged so everyone can see each other. Mirrors are placed to make parts that are hard to see visible. They often have and use video-phones and computers with web cameras. They often have alerting systems with lights that flash to signal a doorbell or a video-call or a baby crying. Gallaudet is working on having Deaf Space incorporated into their building plans, which includes wider hall ways.

Speaking in the Presence of a Deaf Person is Considered Impolite

People who know ASL at any skill level show respect by doing their best to sign instead of speaking. It is disrespectful to speak in front of a deaf person. If speaking with a Deaf person and a non-signing person it is okay to translate, and speak, but don't speak while signing at the same time.
