Cause-Effect

used for both informing and persuading audiences. Can compare for greater understanding or to persuade that one thing is better than another

Compare and Contrast

Used to argue and persuade the audience to accept the writer's position or viewpoint.

Counter-Argument/Rebuttal

Used to inform or instruct the audience on new concepts in the author's purpose.

Definition and Example

Information is used in news articles, textbooks, biographies, documents...etc.

Informing Examples

Typically to inform; however, if it's listed or categorized by value could be used to persuade.

List or Classification

Author's use it in their writing to inspire a certain response within their audience.

Loaded Language

All, Could, Likely, Never, Possibly, Should, Always, Every, May, Often, Possible, Sometimes, Appear, Has... are this type of examples.

Positions/Beliefs Examples

It is mostly used to argue or persuade in the author's purpose.

Premise/Support/Conclusion

Used for both informing and persuading audiences. If the solution is predetermined, it most likely is informative; if there are multiple possibly solutions could be persuasive.

Problem-Solution

How the text is organized, constructed or put together for the audience.

Structure Organization

Written to illustrate a theme, event, or story that conveys a mood.

To Entertain

Authors write to persuade, to inform or to entertain in an article, story or poem (PIE).

Author's Purpose

They are lens through which the author sees their subject. Creates author's perspective, position, opinion, and/bias within the text.

Author's Viewpoint

Short Story, Poetry, Novel, Drama, Comedy, Riddles...etc. are examples of this type of author's purpose.

Entertaining Examples

Confirmed or evaluated information that is know to be true. Facts are objective, opinions are subjective.

Fact

Mostly used to entertain the audience by the author.

Narrative/Anecdotal

Author's view or judgment about a subject

Opinion

Awful, Best, Favorite, Great, More, Terrible, Amazing, Better, Frightful, Ugly, Stupid, Fun... are adjectives/adverbs used in authors writing.

Opinions/Bias Examples

Editorials, Advertisements, Billboards, Commercials, Posters...etc. are examples of this.

Persuading Examples

Means to explain, give directions, illustrate, or present information.

Its to expressing an opinion to convince readers to think/feel/act in a certain way.
