Epithelia

classified based on the number of cell layers and cell shape (1st name of tissue indicates number of cell layers, 2nd name of tissue describes shape of cells)

Columnar cell

column shaped cells

Cuboidal cell

cube shaped cells

Squamous cell

flat cells

Stratified epithelia

has more than one layer of cells

Simple epithelia

has one layer of cells

What are the names of the 2 types of cell layers?

•Simple—one layer of cells •Stratified—more than one layer of cells

What are 5 names of tissues that describes the shape and the way of the cells look (2 are different)?

•Squamous—cells are wider than tall (plate-like) - "squashed" •Cuboidal—cells are as wide as tall, like cubes •Columnar—cells are taller than they are wide, like columns *Transitional--only one that transitions from one shape to another *Pseudostratisfied-only one that has cilia on apical surface

There are 8 types of epithelial tissue

...

Stratified Columnar

Many layers of cells but only the surface cells are are columnar; deeper layers are cubodial shaped

Stratified Squamous

Many layers of cells, the basal layer is cuboidal or columnar, becoming flattened (squamous) at the apical surface (named by the cells found at the apical surface); protects against abrasion, forms barrier against infection; outer layer of skin

Pseudostratified Columnar

Single layer of cells; some of these tall & thin cells reach the apical surface, others do not. All are attached to the basal surface with nuclei at different levels making the tissue "appear" stratified

Simple Cuboidal

Single layer of cube-shaped cells; active transport, eases diffusion results secretion; kidney tubules, glands & their ducts

Simple Columnar

Single layer of tall, narrow cells; moves particles out of bronchioles; glands and some ducts

Simple Squamous

Single layer of thin, flat cells; diffusion, filtration, some secretion, some protection; lining blood vessels, the heart, lymphatic vessels

This type of epithelial tissue has only one classification? (It looks like a cuboidal shape, when its not stretched and filled with fliud)

Transitional transitional tissue are stratified cells that appear cuboidal when the organ or tube is not stretched and squamous when the organ or tube is stretched by fluid; found in lining of urinary bladder
