Bio108: Lecture 20
What are the four main function of testosterone?
1) acts locally to facilitate Sertoli cell function 2)maintains male accessory organ function 3) drives the development of male secondary sex characteristics 4) exerts negative feedback on the hypothalamus and the anterior pituitary
Why would a 5-a-reductive inhibitor be used to treat BPH?
Because a 5-a-reductive inhibitory increases DHT and DHT supports prostate gland function and growth
Follow the path the sperm take from the epididymis to urethra.
Epdidymis Vas Deferns Ejaculatory Duct Urethra
Which hormones controls Sertoli and Leydig cell function?
FSH and LH
What us the function of gonadatropin-releasing hormone and inhibin?
GnRH causes the anterior pituitary to secrete FSH and LH. Inhibit excerpts negative feedback onto the anterior pituitary to help limit FSH secretion
What three regions are found in mature sperm and what does each role play?
Head: contains uncles and acrosome Midpiece: contains mitochondria Tail: drives sperm motility
What type of hypogonadism characterizes Klinefelters syndrome?
Primary hypogonadism
What are the functions of the prostate gland, seminal vesicles, and bulbourethral glands?
Prostate gland: smooth muscle contractions deliver secretions to the prostatic urethra. These secretions include citrate which is an energy source for sperm, and enzymes that promote sperm motility Seminal Vesicles: smooth muscle contractions deliver secretions to the ejaculatory duct. These secretions contain fructose which is an energy source for sperm and prostaglandins which helps promote sperm transport. Bulbourethral glands: secretions lubricate the urethra and neutralize traces of acid left behind by urine
What are the functions of Sertoli and Leydig cells?
Sertoli cells contribute to spermitogenesis. They provide nutrients that nourish developing sperm. Deliver chemical signals that direct sperm development Push sperm into seminiferous tubule lumen Secrete testicular fluid into seminiferous tububle lumen Leydig cells secrete testosterone
Which three reflexes control the two phases of the male sexual response?
The three reflexes that control erection and ejaculation consist of: Arterioles, erectile bodies, and bulbospongiosus muscles of the penis Male reproductive duct system and accessory glands Peripheral nervous system and spinal cord
What effects do anabolic steriod use to have on the male reproductive system?
They over stimulate the prostate gland which increases the risk for BPH and prostate cancer
