Bone Healing
4 steps of bone healing
-hematoma forms -fibrocartilage callus forms -bony callus forms -bone remodeling
Step 2: how a bone heals after a fracture
fibrocartilage forms -capillaries grow into the hematoma -fibroblasts and osteogenic cells invade the fracture site from the periosteum and endosteum -phagocytic cells enter and clean up debris
Reduction
realignment of the broken bone ends
Fracture
a complete or incomplete break in a bone
Step 1: how a bone heals after a fracture
a hematoma forms -blood vessels break and hemorrhage(bleeding) -formation of a hematoma(mass of blood outside blood vessels) -tissue at site becomes swollen, painful, inflamed
Step 4: how a bone heals after a fracture
bone remodeling occurs -excess material is resorbed -new compact bone is laid down to reconstruct the bone walls
Step 3: how a bone heals after a fracture
bony callus forms -cartilage gradually converted to spongy bone -repeat steps of endochondral ossification
