Ch. 14: CPT: twist drill, burr holes or trephine, craniectomy, or craniotomy
cisternal or lateral cervical punctures are similar in performance to a lumbar puncture for gaining acess to the
cerebellomedullary cistern -the largest of the subarachnoid cisterns between the cerebellum and medulla oblongata
cerebellomedullary cistern aka
cisterna magna
twist drill holes for puncture are
dime-sized openings in the skill (keyhole crainotomy)
twist drill puncture aka
keyhole craniotomy
a subdural hematoma refers to a
leakage of blood between the dura and arachnoid membranes
cisternal puncture is described as the
passage of a hollow needle through the posterior atlanto-occipital membrane into the cerebellomedullary cistern (cisterna magna)
trephine
surgical instrument with a cylindrical blade used to create an opening in the skill
because the cranium is a closed or finite space, hematomas must be
trained
Hematoma
1. localized collection of blood which has usually clotted 2. creates a space, which does not normally exist, and usually results in trauma
hematomas are found in organs, spaces, or tissue, and are the result of a
break in the wall of blood vessels
to allow a hematoma to expand unchecked can result in displaced brain tissue (under pressure) resulting in
anoxia or death to those tissues and eventually death to the individual
