What is the difference between a chemical reaction in a chemical equation?

A chemical reaction is the process where the identity of one or more of the substances is changed. A chemical equation is the symbolic representation of the process.

Chemical Equation

Chemical symbols of reactants and products representing a chemical reaction.

Write an unbalanced equation for the following reaction: Chlorine and sodium iodide react to form iodine sodium chloride.

Cl₂ + NaI → I₂ +NaCl

For the following unbalanced chemical equation, write the corresponding chemical statement. CH₄ + O₂ → CO₂ + H₂O

Methane reacts with oxygen to form water.

Write an unbalanced equation for the following reaction: Magnesium and oxygen react to form magnesium oxide,

Mg + O₂ → MgO

For the following unbalanced chemical equation, write the corresponding chemical statement. N₂ + H₂ → NH₃

Nitrogen reacts with hydrogen to produce ammonia.

Write an unbalanced equation for the following reaction: Nitrogen and oxygen react to form nitrogen dioxide

N₂ + O₂ → NO₂

Write an unbalanced equation for the following reaction: Dinitrogen Pentoxide reacts to form dinitrogen tetroxide and oxygen

N₂O₅ → N₂O₄ + O₂

Write an unbalanced equation for the following reaction: Ozone reacts to form oxygen.

O₃ → O₂

Reactant

Substance consumed in a chemical reaction. (Each chemical species that appears on the left of the arrow in a chemical equation.)

Product

Substance produced in a chemical reaction. (Each species that appears on the right of the arrow.)

For the following unbalanced chemical equation, write the corresponding chemical statement. S + HNO₃ → H₂SO₄ + NO₂ + H₂O

Sulfur reacts to nitric acid to form sulfuric acid, nitrogen dioxide, and water.

For the following unbalanced chemical equation, write the corresponding chemical statement. S₈ + O₂ → SO₂

Sulfur reacts with oxygen to form sulfur dioxide.

For the following unbalanced chemical equation, write the corresponding chemical statement. P₄O₁₀ + H₂O → H₃PO₄

Tetraphosphorus decoxide reacts with water to form phosphoric acid.

Physical State

The classification of each species in a chemical equation as a solid (s), a liquid (l), a gas (g), an aqueous solution (aq)
